“Quiet suburban location but close to the city centre.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2013

Tall trees is located in the quiet and leafy suburb of Ainslie, one of Canberra's oldest suburbs and is located about 5 kms from the city centre. ( 40 minute walk to the major shopping precinct of the Canberra Centre and surrounding businesses and restaurants). The Ainslie shops are a ten minute walk away, with a supermarket, bakery, chemist, popular corner bistro and 2 restaurants- including the renowned "Pulp Kitchen".

I booked us in for a weekend special deal which comprised Friday, Saturday and Sunday night for $115 per night.

Our room was comfortable with the following facilities: a medium sized bar fridge, a microwave, cutlery and crockery for two and an electric jug as well as a medium sized wall mounted TV with access to a number of Foxtel channels in addition to the usual free to air.
The bathroom was clean and modern with a plentiful supply of towels and the usual array of toiletries.
There were a few minor niggles - no detergent or small cloth for wiping down benches etc and no tea towel. If you are providing some self catering facilities it would seem a good idea to provide these items in the interest of the overall cleanliness of the unit. My other pet peeve - an overstocked minibar - was also evident. As usual, this meant there was no room for our supplies without rearranging the fridge and removing some of the contents elsewhere. I also found the reception staff a little offhand when we arrived. No welcoming smiles, and a slightly grumpy approach. On the other hand the cleaning staff were very pleasant and helpful.

The hotel has a bistro where breakfast is served and I noticed the menu for dinner seemed very reasonably priced. There is also a guest laundry with free washing machine use and a dryer available for a $2 charge.

The hotel was obviously very popular during our stay as all the car parking spaces were full and all of the rooms seemed to be occupied. Despite this the hotel was incredibly quiet and I enjoyed an excellent nights sleep each night.

I was very pleased with our choice of hotel overall and would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: Try to get a room away from the main hotel block.

Tried to check in - my booking was not on the system, thankfully I had a copy of the booking confirmation email. Booking was soon sorted and we were given a room. Receptionist Courtney was very pleasant. Room was very basic, but clean. The bed was very uncomfortable, like sleeping on a plank of wood. Bathroom was tiny, very claustrophobic. Went to have shower late Friday night - hot water bearly warm, got up Saturday morning, no hot water at all, rang reception who reported back a few minutes later that the boilers had gone out over night and it would take 1/2 hour to get any hot water. Other guests in our group reported unable to sleep past 6am as all they could hear was the door banging closed each time a staff member entered/exited near the dining room...The breakfast in the dining room was lovely, the staff very welcoming and pleasant, nice way to start the day. But, due to the beds being very uncomfortable and the tiny bathroom, our next trip to Ainsley I will look for somewhere else.

We refer to your review. We are most apologetic that your booking somehow was not in the system but, fortunately, that problem was resolved. More importantly, we take your point that the bed upon which you slept was below standard. We have replaced all but eight beds in our 79 rooms, and the remaining beds are on order. You were accommodated in one of our standard rooms and paid a commensurate rate. The bathrooms in those rooms are smaller, but are fully equipped. The hot water issue was an unusual occurrence out of our control and was simply bad luck although, the service was restored within approximately 30 minutes. The door slamming was not the doing of our staff, who only begin work after 7 a.m. We will now place a prominent notice on the exit door asking guests to show consideration. Once again we apologize for your inconvenience and unsatisfactory experience. You comment on your lovely experience in our dining room (for which we thank you) and we would ask you to consider staying with us again. Please call our General Manager, Pat Young, ahead of time and she will make every effort to accommodate you in a room which will meet your every need. With regards - Guest Relations Director

Usually this is a good spot to stop. However the family room 105 was noisy and stunk. The smell was overwhelming. Strong mouldy and musty smell. Bunk beds and and shower in a bath are useless when travelling with elderly people. This is not a cheap price motel so no one should have to be put in a room such as this one.

Room Tip: State exactly the bedding expected. Say you don't want a room next to reception. If elderly stat...

We refer to your review. We have two types of family rooms - the sleeping arrangements are either a Queen-size bed and two bunkbeds, or a Queen-size bed and two single beds. Unfortunately, the property was full and this was the only room which was available to you and your two travelling companions. We do have Deluxe rooms with a Queen bed and one single bed and we also have accessible rooms with walk-in showers. Unfortunately, you did not communicate your specific requirements to us. Had you done so, we would have made every endeavour to meet those requirements. Nor, at any time, during your stay, did you communicate, to our willing, hard-working and professional team, that there was a musty smell in your bathroom. Had you done so, again we would have been in a position to address the complaint. But, instead, you have chosen to disparage our property by posting your complaints on the net after the event. For the record, we have inspected the room and there is no evidence of any stale smell. That does not mean that there might not have been a problem with a drain during your stay, but we were never told. We repeat - had we been told, we would promptly have dealt with the matter. We do hope that you will consider staying with us again. If you do so, please call our General Manager, Pat Young, ahead of time and she will every effort to ensure that your stay is pleasant and problem free. With regards - Guest Relations Director

Situated in a lovely quiet residential area of Canberra. Easy access to the city and attractions. The hotel is neat and clean with good sized rooms, and friendly service. Will definitely come back and stay when we next come to Canberra. Bought a "package" which included a visit to the Toulouse Lautrerc exhibition, gave added flexibility as time of visit not defined.

Walking distance to a friends house, so otherwise would have stayed at a regular hotel.
It's clean quiet- well no road noise- but its a motel in Ainslie. What do you expect.
So if you book, read a review or look online first. Repeat. It's a motel for $134 a night. I have paid more for worse and less for better.

We had low expectations, and it was what we expected. Close to Ainslie shops 500m and there is at least two places to eat. Canberra is a bit weird.. so this fits in just fine, a motel in a residential street. Where else but Canberra....

We refer to your review. You obviously stayed in one of our budget, standard rooms. In addition to those renovated, fully-equipped, motel-style rooms (LCD TV's, free Wi-Fi etc), we also offer some of the most generously-sized and well-designed, totally renovated, hotel rooms in Canberra. So, if you choose to stay with us again, please consider paying a little more, and we assure you that you will be pleasantly surprised that Tall Trees Canberra is not (I paraphrase your review) a non-descript motel. I stay here for work and get quite disappointed that we pay the same for this place as we do for the Novotel.

Hardly call it a hotel, it's a motel at best !!

Fire alarms go off at nothing, but at least they got some free wifi now.

We refer to your review. Our prices are set with reference to all our competitors in Canberra, and we believe that they are always competitive. You chose to stay in one of our standard rooms. Our Executive and Deluxe rooms are certainly not motel style. They are amongst the largest hotel rooms available in Canberra and are very well priced. We do hope that you will consider staying with us again and maybe upgrading your accommodation to a standard which may better suit you. With regards - Guest Relations Director
