“Comfort in canberra”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2013 via mobile

Big rooms. Lovely comfy beds.
Short walk to manaka shops, cafés and restaurants.
Gym has great equipment.
Resturant food is very nice too.
Room service is nice but a bit pricey.
Staff are welcoming and rooms are clean and quite.

Stayed here a few times, but we won't be back. A bad start at check in when the assistant manager informed me that there would be an extra charge for breakfast as the system had not registered two people so I had been charged for one!
I thought the hotel had been renovated - well there was (I think) new carpet, but that's it. Bathroom was very tired, towels were third rate, old and small. The steps to the stupid raised area for the bed are irregular and both of us misstepped down from it - jarring my back badly. It is obvious from the carpet wear that it happens all the time!
Beds used to be comfortable, but ours sagged and the air-conditioning got stronger in the night, blowing hard and cold on us. We tried opening the window but the traffic noise defeated us.
We had a King Spa suite and it was not worth the money.
Breakfast was very average, and their attention to allergies sadly lacking..

My daughter and I have stayed here for the last 3 years whilst attending Floriade.
We unfortunately arrived after 10pm this year due to traffic in Sydney and wanted some supper.
Nothing fancy, just some toast but room service refused as the menu said pizza or wedges after 10pm!
We had booked a suite for two nights but were still asked to pay $10 to use the gym that was modern in the 80's.
I tend to remember the little things that staff do to make your stay special/pleasant.
We'll be going to the Hyatt next year as we were treated with kindness and respect whilst enjoying a lovely afternoon tea!!

We stayed in an Embassy Suite room in late Sept 2013. Room was great for 2 adults & 2 kids with and main bedroom and bathroom the highlight. Breakfast had a good selection of hot and cold and the location made getting around easy.

Well, the good run within the Rydges brand must have run out. This tired, untidy and unclean establishment needs work, inside and out. Don't get me wrong, the dream bed is still a winner and the quietness is pretty complementary but that would be the end of the complements.

Given full rack rate was paid despite bring a rewards member, the f&b staff need to remember to turn the vacuum cleaner on on their daily circuit, the evening bar staff need to treat people like its an honour to serve them rather than a lame chore and the breakfast team could learn to smile and be chirpy. As for the room, the dream bed is as always heavenly but when you see that the doona is heavily stained and the housekeeping staff don't even really look for things out of the ordinary, you can only surmise that the management staff at this hotel have been there too long and the place needs a freshen up all round.

Mr Rydge.... Really? Is this the best you can do?

Room Tip: Haggle on the price, I would have had I known what is was going to be like

We did a weekend special. It included 2 nights accommodation with a buffet breakfast, parking and tickets to see The Turner from Tate art exhibition.Cost was $322 Excellent value.Breakfast had a lot of variety. We could have omelettes freshly coked and coffees made to order along with plenty of cereals, fresh fruit, eggs, bacon & pastries.Staff were friendly and pleasant. Room was updated with a new bed & carpet plus a decent sized TV.Bathroom was a little worn but the shower was hot and had a strong water flow. There was a pool, sauna and spa to use.The gym cost $10 .Overall very good value and central located with attractions only a short distance away.

I was really pleased to read that you enjoyed the Turner Exhibition it really was fantastic; we’re looking forward to the “Golden Incan Treasures” exhibition coming in December.

Thank you for the kind remarks on Breakfast and the Health Club I’ll be sure to pass on your feedback to the staff in those areas.

I hope we have an opportunity to be of service on a future visit to Canberra.

Sincerely

The hotel does need sprucing up and I wouldn't want to pay the full rack rate, but the rooms are large, comfortable, clean and quiet. I quite like the interesting layout of the main section, with the garden in the middle. I think that could be made a real centrepiece if it were sensitively redeveloped.

Breakfast buffet is pretty ordinary for the price but adequate - if time isn't pressing, take the 10 minute walk to Manuka to eat. The bar is not bad for an evening drink.

There seems to be a pretty large indoor pool - didn't try it out.

And something you don't often get to praise in a hotel - the art on the walls is excellent and interesting (for a hotel - it's not the NGA). Someone has curated a really good selection there.

I note you stayed in November 2012, we have spent over a $Million refurbishing bedrooms since, they are certainly spruced up and looking much better.

It was great to read that you took the time to look at the artwork, we’ve found a few more pieces since your last stay (agree we’re not the NGA) which may be of interest.

Thank you for your interest, please visit us again soon.
