“Good Location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday NEW

Nicely refurbished and good location. The rooms were really nice and comfortable. Great showers and no noise from outside. Staff were very helpful. But would be good to have more vegetarian options on the breakfast and room service menu.

Very good refurbished hotel full of history. Rooms are pleasantly furnished and comfortable, bed was very comfortable, reading light accessible, showers good and easy to use. Bar service a little patchy.

So glad they've restored this place. It combines an elegant old-world feel with really nice modern fittings in the rooms. Our room was really quiet and we slept well. The hotel is in a good location and we were able to walk to the Art Gallery, (which was the reason for our stay). Recommend the outdoor seating area on a sunny day. Some of the service was a bit hit and miss, but the staff were friendly.

The ideal Canberra location for visitors who want walking access to Parliament House, the National Gallery, National Library, National Archives, etc. Only major attraction too far for walking is the War Memorial. A lovely hotel, especially for visitors interested in Australian history and culture (loved the photos of former prime ministers in the public spaces!). Very comfortable rooms, friendly staff, and an excellent restaurant.

My wife and I spent last weekend in Canberra. We were looking forward to staying at the Kurrajong because we thought that the Hyatt had become somewhat jaded (we travel to Canberra every six months). However we thought that the Kurrajong had been way overrated - indeed its marketing gives a false impression as to what to expect - and our stay there spoiled our weekend.

The bad experience started at check in. No doorman. There was no one on reception. In due course several persons came and went making studious efforts to avoid eye contact.

Then the room (room 104). It was a heritage veranda room. It was tiny The veranda was off to the side adjacent to the room next door. Given the configuration of the room the veranda was useless. A cheap tiny wardrobe. The very tight bath room had a small vanity unit -so small that there was no room for storage of toiletries around it. Even the toilet bowl seemed half size, The tap fitting hardly reached the basin. A tiny bath. No shower screen -to prevent water spreading across the bathroom floor house keeping had left a rolled up towel on the floor (talk about style). On check out I was told there was another shelf which could have been used for storage but it was so narrow as to useless. The cost cutting measures on refurbishment are evidenced by the fact that the room door doesn't even have a buzzer.

And don't expect the normal amenities such as gowns, slippers, tooth brushes , cotton buds, shower caps, radios , clothes brushes, bottled water, etc. - there are none. The Guest Guide says that newspapers at the guest's cost will be delivered to the room but great firmness was required to get staff to accept that (and places which claim to be of the standard as claimed by the Kurrajong would normally supply free newspapers) . There is no room service for breakfast or say the late night hot chocolate.

I could go on. The hotel is anything but an alternative to the Hyatt. Perhaps it might be seen as a good country motel (but even country motels supply 5 cent shower caps). However it would even fail that motel test because it has very limited parking . One suspects that somewhere along the way what could have been a great refurbishment of the Kurrajong has been high jacked by over aggressive cost cutting measures (which extends to the way guests are treated).

Room Tip: Given my experience I would not stay at the hotel without first checking the room.

I picked the Hotel Kurrajong after reading the positive review here at Tripadvisor & wasn't disappointed barring a few niggles. As per other reviews here, the hotel has retained the charm of classic older style hotel with a new make over that's not over the top. It's not a big place so it also feels quite intimate. The classic room whist not big was comfortable and the complementary breakfast was also quite good.

The only criticism I had (& can be easily addressed by the management) was the barely passable warm showers and the carpets that can do with more frequent vacuum both in the room and in the hallways.

The hotel has friendly staff and good food and a lovely atmosphere. The quality of the rooms are fantastic with the recent refurbishment. It is conveniently located to the parliamentary triangle. The only issue was I found the beds very hard.
