“convenient location, nothing fancy.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2012

My first impression is "nice old charming place". There are interesting history of the hotel one can read about on the wall at the bar. Reception are is pleasant, beautifully polished wooden floor & fire place. check in was trouble free. I opted for budget room for work travel. The room gets serviced once a week. single bed, desk & TV. En suite bathroom which was in 60's decor. It remind me of old college dormitory. Apparently, it was to accommodate students studying hotel management until few years ago. Good thing about the hotel is you get free WIFI throughout the hotel & in the room. Breakfast is average @ $19 for continental. There is no restaurant service on the weekend. Reception is open 24/7. plenty of parking, great location. Friendly staff.

I stayed here as it was the only "budget" option on a recent unexpected trip to Canberra, although I question how budget $88 a night is...
The common areas of the hotel are very nice with original period features etc. The room I stayed in was definitely towards the bottom end of the market. Although clean, the furniture is a mis mash of second hand office furniture and an uncomfortable single bed.
It is OK for a single night but not for a holiday.

We arrived unplanned and apparently during a festival of some sort so our options were limited. We hadn't stayed in Canberra since we were youngens so we looked for something comfortable with breakfast for two nights. We found it at Hotel Kurrajong, it was just a little in need of new aircon and refurnishings and new carpets. The building has an interesting history and is a period piece so to speak. The location was great though, we were central to the key sites we wanted to see around Capital Hill. Purpose was met, service was fair, continental breakfast was great, dinning for dinner in the restuarant not so good but again, it was handy for us. Our hint, don't turn on the air con, just open up the beautiful old windows and let the breeze in.

Room Tip: Our ground level room looked out over the car park so there was no view and a little noise earlier i...

In 18 yrs of travelling I have NEVER had $100 held from my accounts in this manner. DISGUSTING.
I was denied acess to this money for the duration of my stay and discovered it will be returned at my bank's leisure.
The rooms are ok, no hairdryer or iron as advertised.
Main feature is the location.
Given the fraudulent transaction, will not be returning.

Might as well get the positives out of the way first because there are very few of them. Location is decent for Parliament House, Art Galleries etc. and rooms are clean. Apart from that this was quite possibly the worst hotel experience I've had in the past 5 years. On arriving at 7pm there was no one on reception and it was 10 minutes before anyone appeared. The door to the office behind the reception was open and you could see crap all over the floor. Never a good sign to see such poor housekeeping on open display. The instructions on how to get to my room were poor (although that might be just me) which resulted in me wandering around various wings of the hotel. Many appeared shutdown or mothballed. I was working into the evening both nights I was there and so ordered room service. The food was simply awful. Chewy duck on the first night and an even chewier steak on the second...a difficult trick to achieve with a rare steak. I fancied a glass of wine around 9pm only to be told the bar shut at 8.30 and no one was available to pour it. I could go on but you get the picture. Go somewhere else. A hotel that is showing all the signs of having cut costs to the bone and if it's still open in another years time I'll be surprised.

As a postscript I discovered on arriving back home that I had left something in my room. I called and offered to pay for postage to return it. Reception said it would be no problem and that housekeeping would be in touch to make arrangements. I'm still waiting to hear from them a week later.

Well appointed, beautifully restored building. Originally housed workers in the early days of Canberra and then used by politicians such as Ben Chifley who died there. Walking distance to Parliament House, National Art Gallery, Portrait Gallery, Old Parliament House, rose garden. Comfortable beds and welcoming service.

i booked this hotel knowing its historic past and thought it would be a nice treat for my parents with whom i was traveling.

Unfortunately when we got there none of its historic charm was evident. the hotel itself is clean and presentable, but has been modernised and redecorated. The room was clean, and the beds comfortable, but the aircon didn't work well, the sink had been smashed and repaired, the bathroom was dated and it just didn't feel particularly special.

What i found particularly annoying tho was that the restaurant and bar weren't open. It felt like we were the only guests staying there, and as it was just after new years and i knew canberra would be a ghost town, if i'd been forewarned that we couldn't get anything more than a continental breakfast (for $20) i would have booked somewhere else.

I even had to ask for additional cups etc for the room - how hard is it to provide cups equal to the number of room guests? On the plus side, it is a good location, and they did give a discount on the overall bill after i complained. But it was not special and i probably wouldn't bother staying there again, except on price. Nothing else really recommends it. It stands out in its blandness in a town that is already bland enough.

Room Tip: the rooms with balconies cost more but are smaller than the standard rooms. skip the balcony, it...
