As avid sports fans we were excited about visiting the AIS in Canberra - and we were not disappointed. It's a vast complex of sporting and training venues, together with live-in accommodation for the athletes on a massive scale. (It's much bigger than some of the new towns we have in Scotland!)
On arrival you see huge sculptures around the grounds which are stunning. We booked the organised tour of the training facilities. There were about 20 on our tour, led by a girl called Tara who had recently retired from competative long-distance swimming. She was extremely friendly and very knowledgable about the resources available to Australia's aspiring Olympians.
Details about all the great Australian athletes who had gone through AIS were proudly on display. We were led to a room where we could try our hand at different sports - basketball; skeleton (really cool, excuse the pun); rowing; cycling; to name a few. On display were many of the accolades from Sydney 2000 Olympics. We were shown many facilities including multi-function sports hall; volleyball courts; conditioning gym; gymnastics hall; and the amazing swimming complex.
The AIS store sold replica sports merchanise which was fairly good value.
A fantastic day out for sports fans - a must see in Canberra.
