“Taken a while but”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2008

Okay, it's taken me a while to write this review. Partly because most of the issues cannot be rectified or adressed by the property and partly due to external factors.

Background
We like nice places to stay but because we are away for sport self catering can bea big plus. I chose the York after some reccy by another TA regular and the website. I have to add I very much appreciated the leg work by the TA reg and the actual apartment itself did not disappoint.

Accom
Slight hitch at check in. I had confirmed via phone call that our room had a king and 2 singles. Something failed in communication and we had a king king room. Not so good with 2 teenagers of opposite gender. While a rollaway was available both were racing at Oceania level and a good nights sleep is a key reason for spending an extra night on accom. Choccies as an apology were greatly appreciated but family disharmony didn't help esp as one was vying for selection to State team.

The biggest issue was the noise, not from other residents but from 11am till about 4am on Thurs, Fri and Sat Night as people disgorged from Bars, had brawls etc at what seemed to be right under our window. Sunday night was calm and quiet but by them I knew that the location certainly had a few problems.

Parking,
No problems at all, even space for the second car as they were not full for the period in which we stayed. Being undercover in Canberra in July is a big bonus at 6am

Restaurants..

Fantastic selection nearby..maybe this is part of the noise issue. Great IGA for self caterers but closes at 8pm on a Sunday night (not an issue just be aware if you intend to buy brekky after dining)

Other facilities..

Well, none really but maybe in summer the garden is usable.

Summary

Our unit was clean, comfortable and spacious and the only thing that stopped me staying again was external noise...a pity really

4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2007

Rated as a 4.5* hotel, The York certainly provides the standard of accommodation you would expect - the apartments are spacious, modern and clean. However, it falls short on the details. Reception hours are odd as are the opening times of the cafe/restaurant that provides breakfast. On a Sunday morning when the hotel was full, reception and the cafe didn't open until 9am! Also, would have expected at least a soft drink mini-bar in the room but there was barely enough tea, coffee & milk supplied to have a cuppa each in the evening and one in the morning.
Never the less, staff were friendly and accommodating when they were available and certainly bend over backwards to make guests feel welcome. Would certainly recommend for a long stay as kitchens are very well equipped and living space is comfortable. Washer and dryer in the bathroom would also come in handy for a longer stay but we weren't entrirely comfortable for one night here.

  • Liked — Proximity to restaurants and entertainment district of Kingston
  • Disliked — No mini-bar (even soft drinks would be good)
  • Stayed August 2007, traveled as a couple
