“A great place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2012

The York provides self-contained apartments, right across the road from excellent cafes & shops in Kingston. It is in very close walking distance to Manuka another great suburb. Very close to all attractions.

The rooms are well furnished and fitted out. The room I had was nice and quiet. It is a hidden gem and I will be staying again!

Have just had 3 nights at the York. The finer points of housekeeping let this establishment down.
I had to pull a plug of hairs out of the bathroom sink "YUK". The bedside table was covered in dust along with the bedside light and TV remote. The TV didn't work so maybe that is why it was dusty, no one used it!! The dishbrush in the kitchen has seen better days the bristles were flattened. Also the crockery had a greasy feel so we had to wash up before we could use any of the plates, cups, glasses and cutlery. The bathroom is dated and the grout has developed a fair bit of mould. The walls in the bedroom were scuffed spoling an otherwise pleasant room.
We weren't impressed each evening with the smell of cigarettes coming into the room. Covering the gap under the door seemed to help. Saturday night was a bit noisey with people running up and down stairs. It seemed to go on for hours.
On our last morning we could hear the people in the next room showering for a very long time and it probably explained why we had very little hot water for our showers.
On the plus side the bed was a standout, very comfortable. The reception staff were pleasant. The location of The York is exceptional being close to restaurants in Kingston and also a short stroll to even more restaurants and shops at Manuka. A short walk to the Sunday Markets at the Old Bus Depot were a delight.

Room Tip: definitely not facing Giles Street.

The York provide a great location for accessing the cafes, restaurants and bars of Manuka. Our room was quiet, spacious and clean. The kitchen et was more than adequate, although we did not use it. The room also came with packaged breakfast and plunger coffee, but with really excellent cafes across the road there would be no real reason to eat in - you could order meals from the restaurant down stairs.

Room Tip: Corner room away from main street was quiet.

Great location as there are a number of places to eat around. I stayed in a studio room. This is a service apartment with decent kitchen facilities so if you are staying for a few days it is a nice place to be. Bed is comfortable, the room is large, although the bathroom is looking a bit dated. Very clean and you can work out of the room but there is no wireless.

There is secure parking downstairs but limited spots. I hired a car as this was cheaper than getting taxis around the place. Canberra is an easy place to get around in a car. Not public transport - as there virtually is none.

No gym or pool, but if you like running then the lake is just around the corner and you an have a really nice run around it. Pretty flat so good for people like me who like to do general fitness but are by no means really fit.

Tip - they do not have 24 x 7 reception so if you are coming on the weekend or after hours they will make arrangements to get you the keys. It is very simple.

We stayed two nights. The kitchen was spacious, with plenty of crockery, glasses etc and a microwave and hot plates. The plug was too small so it was useless, just a little thing but annoying just the same. It was supposed to have a washing machine but it had been removed at some point and there was just an ironing board in the cupboard.
Very noisy on the Sat night as Giles Street is very busy and the windows were not double glazed. Good points were Foxtel on the TV in the bedroom and a king size bed.
The location is awesome if you plan on eating out. Towels were soft and fluffy and changed without us asking.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that does not face Giles St. The room we had was noisy, even though we requested a Qu...

I stayed at The York on a Saturday evening. The room was clean & spacious. Location is great if you wish to be located in Kingston in the inner south. Unfortunately the windows should have been double glazed. I had a night where I was not able to get any sleep whatsoever! If it wasn't the noise of the happy people going home from the restaurants, night clubs & bars throughout the "entire" night, it was the security alarms going off at the newsagency and other restaurants "directly" across the road.

Room Tip: Sorry, I honestly cannot give you a tip except for: do not stay at The York in Canberra.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2012

Stayed at the York for 4 nights for business. I found the room very suitable for my needs. Clean, tidy, spacious. Location is great (never been to Canberra before), right across the road is a small block of shops, all you need, bottle shop, pharmacy, cafe's, restaurants and supermarket. I used the "room service" restaurant next door ArtEspresso, the meals were divine, I'd go back to Canberra just for their meals. If a downside I arrived at 11pm, I'd received a message when I got off the plane about the lockbox and code, but only to find at that time of the night I had to lug my suitcase up 2 flights of stairs, which I didn't like, only due to not the best knees, so it was a little painful. Otherwise it was a great stay and I would stay there again for either business or pleasure.
