“Great location, helpful staff but noisy at night”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2012

We stayed in a one bedroom apartment (room 609) for 3 nights a few days before Christmas. I found the check in smooth and throughout the stay was impressed with the helpfulness of the front desk staff. Our spa in the room was great and the washing machine and dryer worked well. The bed seemed small to us (double?) but was quite comfortable. The apartment was clean. The location was excellent for us - right on a corner of the city centre. We had some business and some shopping to do and it was only a short walk to do this. Our main problem was the noise at night - the cars on the main road (even though we faced a side street) and the loud drunks (eating at McDonald's?). It is amusing now, not at the time, but we were woken in the wee hours one night by a person trying to make the noise of a police siren! Apart from the noise at night, we had an enjoyable stay.

I've stayed at the James Court apartments (under different management) four times now over the last 13 years. The apartments are generally very clean, but the carpets and bathrooms are starting to look a bit worse for wear.
The two-bedroom apartments are great for a family of four, as there are two bedrooms (queen and twin) and two bathrooms.
Great location - walking distance to the Canberra Centre, tons of great restaurants, and a good cinema.
Main gripes are that parking is $15 a night (many other hotels in the area include free parking), and there is no Wifi, only paid broadband.

Room Tip: The two-bedroom spa apartments are perfect for families.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2012

My husband and I stayed at the Medina for 5 nights during an interstate move. The apartments were centrally located in Canberra's city area and within 5 minutes walking distance to the Civic Centre (Canberra's city shopping mall). The check-in and out was quick and easy with parking located under the apartments. Macdonalds is located next to the building for a quick coffee if needed. The apartments were clean and spacious whilst being quiet (considering it is located next to a main road into the city area). I would defiantly stay here again.

Spent a couple of night here with my wife and two children. Check in and out were seamless the rooms were spacious and tidy. The apartment is centrally located. Would have no problem staying here again in the future or reccomending to others.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2011 via mobile

We stayed in a two bedroom apartment following my arrival from Perth before heading off to Wagga Wagga. The hotel was centrally located and our apartment had the usual kitchen amenities so you could prepare your own food if dining in. The second bedroom had a king sized bed which was great, however for the size room it was in it was a real squeeze to move around this room and open a window for some fresh air.

There were two bathrooms, the ensuite and then the main bathroom for the apartment. When showering the cubicle wasn't the best at keeping water in, and the tiles were too smooth so I'd recommend chucking a towel on the floor to avoid a nasty accident.

Overall though, despite only an overnight stay, I'd be happy to return to these apartments for another stay. They do have longer term residents too, and indication of their popularity.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2011

We had booked a 2 bedroom, 2 Q bed, non-smoking unit for three nights with friends.
Check-in - it was almost as if we were disturbing the person on the desk! She was unfriendly, didn't smile and treated us like she was doing us a favour!
I walked into the unit and spotted an ash-tray full of butts on the verandah! Not a good start. I then went downstairs and asked for it to be cleaned up and they did so immediately, emptying the butts but leaving the ash-tray dirty. What else could the cleaning staff have overlooked I ask?
Bedding/bathrooms - two couples expecting 2 Q bedrooms of similar size as paying equal shares for the room...but NO...one of the bedrooms was so small (couldn't swing a cat) that there was only room to walk around the bed and the suitcases needed to be put outside in the living area. Both beds were hard, worn and the pillows flat and had that musty smell.
The bathroom for use by the small back bedroom was a combination laundry with shower unit and very small sink area. The ensuite bathroom was tired and the spa was very deep with an overhead shower nozzle. You had to literally climb into it! Quite dangerous if you were elderly. If you were tall you would have hit your head on the ceiling as the spa was raised from the floor. Kitchen - fridge was big and most things supplied including a coffee plunger but no coffee for it, just sachets of rubbish coffee.
Living area - couches were fine but wall artwork hung crooked. I also think the cleaning of the carpet was hit-and-miss and the window wouldn't close or open (winder broken?) and the curtains were old and had that grey tinge to them.
Parking - a nightmare! We paid $12 per night for secure parking. However, when we went looking for parking there were no spots left. Most were sign-posted "private parking" and the staff answer to this problem was "that some guest had bought more than one car so no spaces left". The staff member did try to help by moving his car, but it was like he was doing us a favour! This was not a good enough response. Surely they would have a good idea of how many parking vouchers they had to issue to accommodate guests? We ended up parking across the road at no cost.
It was noisy from car traffic and pedestrian traffic as located near to the centre of town. So don't expect a quiet sleep!
Upon check-out, I did speak with the Asst. Manager Lisa about the problems we had had. She did at least say that she would follow through with staff and try and lift their game. And, our parking costs were re-imbursed.

I was so disappointed with this. For more than $200 a night, I'd expect a decent room. On arrival i'm told they dont have out booking. Then they put us in a room that hasn't been serviced and it's a basic room when we paid for a superior room. The TV didn't work, the cutlery was dirty and the bathrooms were covered in hair. Beds were pushed together to make a "double". The room was not up to scratch. The hotel room was above a McDonalds and stunk! There was also hoards of teenagers making noise from 1am-6am, screaming, carrying on and police sirens. The extra money for parking, the NO LATE CHECKOUT policy was a joke, $50 for 90min? Where's the customer service? I went to check out and the lady said "Come back at 9:30pm. Im busy doing the book keeping". I was disgusted and disappointed. And I bet nothing will be done except "I'll pass your complaint on". As if - I would never return.

Room Tip: Don't stay here! The rooms are noisy!
