“Below mediocre”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2014

A most disappointing experience. Our first starter, the Winter Garden $26 entree, was reminiscent of the kind of vegetarian splodge one might have received as airplane food in economy class in the 1970s. Who knows why it was called the Winter Garden?? One received some lukewarm Asian mushrooms, ... overtly acidic … served on top of something fake, faux and spongey that looked rather like a small circular washing-up sponge, and tasted not much better, and appeared to have been sitting in the freezer and then microwaved back into a semi-comatose form of life. It would be better to simply remove this entirely from the menu. Also horribly overpriced for what it is.

The slow cooked eggplant with kombu and chilli oil (Main size $30 == two tiny 'sushi sized rolls' of eggplant) was again absurdly overpriced for what it was. It was nevertheless a considerable improvement over the Winter Garden: at least it was served hot, the kombi was tasty, but the eggplant was swimming in oil. I took a Rennies when I got home.

The crunchy local vegetables with chill jam had far too much chilli for a mere vegetable accompaniment for my taste. Best of the lot was the white fish with spinach and ginger which was actually not bad at all, but again seemed overpriced at $36 for 2 small fingers of fish … hardly suitable for sharing, as claimed.

Then there is the service … instead of bringing everything out at once, dinner is a drawn out process where a single plate with very small portions arrives on it, supposedly to share … so everyone gets a tiny morsel of a morsel. Then, they begin a rather pretentious process of removing all the plates … bring new plates … we then waited another 15 minutes for another morsel of overpriced mediocrity to arrive, … and so on. Maybe one can bring this off at Tetsuyas ... but here it just presents as faux pretension: namely, just mediocre suburban Asian food served at hopelessly overpriced prices. Very disappointed.

“Excellent restaurant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2014 via mobile

This was our third visit and it was as fabulous as the last two! Very consistent quality food and great service! The restaurant has achieved a great balance of flavours, innovative dishes and great interpretations of classic Chinese dishes. We will be back for the family feast event!

“Free Glass of wine!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2014

We were staying at the Burbury Hotel and recieved a card stating we were entitled to a free Glass of wine at Malamay.
We arrived at the place to be told we had to buy a meal to receive this offer.I asked to speak to the Manager to please Explain?
She came and spoke with US and Clearly stated that The Burbury Hotel had printed up the cards incorrectly. ..I informed manager of Malamay it was false advertising, she clearly agreed.
We were offered 2 complimentary glasses of wine. ..Thank You Amy Tran ..you are clearly a Asset to your company in Professional Customer Service.. !!

“An excellent meal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2014

We had an excellent meal for two couples to celebrate some birthdays. We had the tasting menu (which was around $90 per head) and each course was absolutely wonderful. Particular highlights were the crabmeat croquettes and a dish with wagyu beef. The service was also highly professional and attentive. This is an excellent place for special dinner.
