“Pretty good; could be great though.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2012

We chose the full $88 dégustation menu. Some very impressive cooking, with great use of chili and spices in ways that built complex and long flavour structure. Fish, prawn, smoked spatchcock and particularly the spicy chocolate dessert particularly good. Slight downsides were the too fast speed of service; first couple of dishes came too quickly and were lukewarm at best; and a couple of the young men who delivered food mumbled the descriptions. why oh why don't places like this leave a copy of the menu for reference as a matter of course? Wine list has plenty of interesting things. Bit noisy - surprising as there is good spacing of tables.

“Fabulous food in an interesting setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2012

The owners previous restaurant ventures (Lanterne Rooms and Chairman and Yip) meant that we went to Malamay with high expectations. The set degustation menu suited us perfectly, despite some severe allergies making the odd dish needing replacement with another.

The dishes were small, however well balanced and appropriate to the courses that followed; the twice cooked eggplant dish was an absolute standout ~ it would be hard to find a dish this good in many of the top restaurants of the world. Good descriptions of each dish were provided as they were delivered by highly professional staff who didn't succumb to extraneous adjectives in their explanations. With only one of us drinking, an interesting wine list included many good wines by the glass at surprisingly good prices, something that is all to rare in licenced premises these days.

The atmosphere is interesting, and despite there being a very loud table in the bamboo curtained area the intimacy was maintained. The lighting was very low which made reading difficult.

“Different”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2012 via mobile

Dining partners seafood aversion complicated the order but this was well handled. Quality OK but prefer Lanterne Rooms ( same ownership). Something different.

“Absolutely stunning!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

I went to this restaurant for a business dinner with 22 guests. We were allocated a private room, although the walls were just hanging bamboo it provided good separation from the other guests though I did feel sorry for those there trying to have an intimate dining experience.
The restaurant is very well lit , as in low lighting. The decor is also dark which adds to the ambience.
The food is modern Asian and was delightful, even the Eggplant which i was very surprised about. Our menu was set at about 7-8 courses. All were small, tasty and served by very efficient staff.
On a whole the staff where really good, very professional. By this I mean one of those nights where things flow very well and you hardly even know the wait staff are there.

If you are there as a couple make sure you dine away from the group areas, of which there are two.

“So good!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2012

We decided on Malamay for a Friday dinner after work. After a drink at Ostani across the road, we had an early booking at 6.30. We were the first customers but it started to fill from then on.

The decor is great and much quieter than the sister restaraunt, the Lantern Room. We had the 7 course degustation and for $88 I thought good value. When the first course arrived I was pleasantly surprised. It was a single scallop with a tiny purée and was simply superb. This was followed by a prawn dish, an excellent fish course and each dish was so well cooked and presented I couldn't help but be impressed.

A couple of the courses were wagyu beef and there was also a smoked spatchcock. Magnificent.

Two waiters asked us if we would like another course but both my wife and I were fine. She couldn't get through the wagyu beef cheek so I was obliged to help her out. I am not big on deserts but she managed to finish mine off!!! My only comment would be the hit of chilli in the chocolate desert. It was probably a little too strong but added more interest than detracted from the dish.

The wine menu was extensive but a bit light on for wines by the glass and only one light beer.

The service was spot on. Drinks arrived quickly, the meals were prompt without rushing us and the waiters all knew exactly what they were delivering. This is where this trio of restaraunts really excels. Their competitors could learn a lot by watching a group of young, enthusiastic, professionals go about their business.

This is how dining should. Great food, great service in a really good environment.

Well done Malamay, I'll be back.
