“A pleasant surprise in Canberra”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2014

I have just stayed here for three nights and it has been a very pleasant stay. This hotel is a little way out of the CBD but....it is really quiet here. My room was on the ground floor and the hotel didn't seem to be that busy, which gave the place a relaxed feel.

My room was really nice. Some of the furniture was a little old, but the bed was huge, new and one of the most comfortable I have had anywhere. The shower pumps out scalding hot water (which I love, but do be careful to check the temp before you dive in). The carpet is new and the place looks like it has recently been painted.

I have eaten both breakfast and dinner in the restaurant. Breakfast is a sort of ordered buffet. On seating they'll ask you want you want by way of eggs, toast, snags, tomatoes, mushrooms etc and bring it to you on the plate. If you want more just order. There is heaps of cereal, milk, toast etc. The food was quite good and if you book breakfast on arrival the charge is $18.00, which is pretty good compared to the big chain hotels in Civic, which charge $30+.

Dinner was really nice and two courses plus a drink cost me about $40, which is average. If you do stay here it is about a 10+ minute walk to the Kingston shops, so you may have to factor that in.

My 'world renowned' acid test.....(drum roll)... Which is the quality of the iron and ironing board is......PASS. Yes, a tick! The ironing board and iron were of good quality and without burn / scorch marks. Folks, my rule of thumb is a decent iron means you have management who are not skimping!

The room has a nice big Samsung TV which faces the bed and can swivel around. The split system air cond is quiet and effective.

The 200 bus runs past the hotel and takes about 20 mins to get you into town. I like this hotel. It's homely and quiet. I'm glad I stayed here for a change. Try it!

Room Tip: Ground floor is good.

We are coming to Canberra this Tuesday and staying at the Diplomat again. We were there 27 years ago and loved it so much that it was the first place we thought of to stay at on this visit. We bought visitors from England and they were so impressed. We always tell friends and family stay at Dipolmat Hotel .The rooms are lovely and the set up with the restaurant is brilliant. We have had feed back now and then and its always been good. We are so looking forward to our romantic break in Canberra. I just know I will be able to write another review next week when we are back. Bev Zahorodnyj

We stayed here on a really chilly June weekend. The room was large and well appointed and the staff were very welcoming.

Energetic people will be able to walk to the cafe precinct in Manuka and Old Bus Depot markets otherwise they are only a few minutes by car.

Stayed one night after arriving late in Canberra. Unable to have a room with two queen beds (the hotel didnt appear to be fully booked) but what we got was comfortable. Strange set up in dining room with book shelves and weird menu book - however the steaks were excellent. Staff pleasant. Have stayed here before and thought hotel is beginning to look 'tired'. Not sure about the 'art work' dotted around the walls.

Hi dolores01,

Thanks for staying with us and providing your feedback. Booked. Restaurant is a new concept that we have been working on to provide guests (in particular solo travelers) with something to read or browse while dining. We're very pleased that you enjoyed your meal.

On the artwork, this seems to be changing almost every month at the moment!

Hope to see you around the hotel soon

Regards

Stayed for 2 nights with my 11 yo son. Whilst had booked a standard room, very pleased at check in when we were upgraded to a suite. The rooms were very quiet, spacious and very clean. Electric blankets on the beds was great given the nights were below freezing. Restaurants in Kingston less than 10 mins walk away. Staff at reception very helpful when I was having a problem with the air conditioning (heating). Came to room and quickly sorted it out. Loved the whole experience. I recommend the Diplomat Hotel.

We stayed here in January 2014. I had planned my proposal to my now fiancée at the zoo during the day (all went to plan) and I had contacted the Diplomat Hotel beforehand to ask about a nice restaurant in the area, which they did very well with. They also complimentary upgraded our room for the special night. All in all it was a great visit!

I was in Canberra on business and stayed at the Diplomat. It was a surprising little gem in Canberra. The room was spacious and clean. The Staff were very friendly and helpful, with a read smile and up for a chat. Had dinner at Booked and enjoyed it very much. A vast array of television stations to tune into after a day hard at work. Handy to the shops at Manuka but you would definately need a car.

Room Tip: Rooms near the front corner miss the noise of the service entry
