“Service with a smile plus location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2013

I stay at the Crowne Plaza numerous times throughout the year (business and pleasure). Their service remains consistently good. I have not met a staff member who is not pleasant and ready to offer assistance with a smile. Rooms are a good size and very well serviced. The Allara bar is great for a bar meal if you don't want to use the restaurant and the breakfast buffet is excellent. And 10 mins walk to central shopping!

Room Tip: If you can, choose a park view room

5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2013

We are a 30-ish year old couple that stayed for two nights in a King Park View room (room 319, third floor), when travelling from Newcastle to attend an event at the Royal Theatre/ National Convention Centre.

We could not have chosen a more convenient location - the convention centre being a very easy five minute walk from the hotel.

On arrival, staff were extremely friendly and helpful, going out of their way to make our stay comfortable. The car park was full (due to the event, I expect) and we were offered valet parking at the car park rate to compensate. Forgetting toothpaste, the hotel offers these essential toiletry items if needed, this saves an emergency dash at the eleventh hour to find the nearest local shops. It doesn't sound like much, but these additional bits of thoughtfulness make all the difference when you are in a hurry and in an unfamiliar town.

Unfortunately, I ended up having to do some late night work on the laptop, however I found the configuration of having the desk behind the bedhead to be unique and extremely practical. It afforded my husband a good nights sleep while I was able to work in peace. In every other hotel I have been in, the desk is directly under the window which shines light on the sleeping partner while simultaneously blocking everyone's view from your window. This again shows that extra care has been put into thinking about how the hotel rooms are typically used.

I would mention at this point that, while easy to access and at fast speed, that if you require large file transfers (I had to download a 3 gig file for work) the internet pricing scheme is not for the faint hearted. However if you are using the internet as typically used on a weekend trip - ie. small file downloads, reading email, facebook, googling for local restaurants/maps, uploading photos, watching streaming tv or movies - the allocated data is more than enough for regular use. It is only in the exceptional circumstance of requiring excess data that the rates increase. So under normal use, the pricing is in line with most other accomodation. There is a business data plan available (10G), which had I of known in advance that I had to do some work, I would have purchased at the onset.

Aside from being close to the Convention Centre, the hotel is very centrally located. Whilst here we also visited the National Gallery, Questacon, the old Bus Depot Markets and had coffee with friends @ Kingston, all were a reasonable distance from the hotel. The furthest visit being to the Deep Space Observatory open day which was a scenic 30 min drive from Kingston and well worth the visit. For supplies, the Canberra Shopping Centre is within walking distance with Target and Supabarn Supermarket opened late on a Sunday (helpful for the unprepared or hurriedly packed!).

The included breakfast, I was unable to attend, but my husband rated it as "possibly the best breakfast of any hotel, anywhere", so I think that speaks for itself.

What else?
Room service was efficient and offers a varied menu.
Room cleanliness was of a high standard. Concierge and parking valets both helpful and friendly - though we found having someone else carry our bags awkward, that is down to my own preferences and no reflection on the staff.

Overall I would rate this hotel very highly. Generally carbon copies of each other, I am left impressed by the extra attention and care to detail in all aspects of our visit, showing a thoughtfulness that is not seen in many hotels today. Pleasant, personable staff are a welcome bonus.

Room Tip: We found the park view room to have a pleasant aspect, while the king size bed afforded a good night...

I have stayed at the Crowne Plaza several times over many years and have never had a bad experience. The rooms are clean and modern along with the foyer and restaurant. My kids love the buffet breakfast.

The only disappointment is when I cannot get a booking or the prices are too high because parliament is sitting.

You can walk to the many restaurants in the Civic area and you are only a few minutes drive from all the major tourist attractions and major government offices.

Room Tip: Make sure you book early and get a deal

Not an inexpensive hotel so very annoying when room not serviced by 2.00pm. Maybe ok if out on business all day but if touring Canberra whole point is to be able to pop back in afternoon.
Agree they charge and service for company credit card, pity as very convenient location for visiting Archives and exhibitions. Be sure you are not charged for WIFI if Elite member!

Room Tip: Overlook park

Dear buzzissi,

Thank you for your review and for choosing to stay with us on this trip. I agree with your sentiment in regard to room servicing times and while we endeavour to ensure all rooms are clean in a timely fashion we do clean rooms up until 4pm on days when we are very busy. I regret that this impacted your stay. Although it usually would not be necessary, we can of course prioritise rooms if you know you will be returning to the room at a certain time and let us know.
I do hope you enjoyed the exhibitions and other attractions during your stay and we look forward to the chance to welcome you back.

Yours Sincerely

I went to Binara one for a couple of quiet ones and for two beers (one tap and one bottle) it came to $22. Yes that is right $22, we are not in Paris, London or even Sydney for that matter and I am trying to work out how IHG justify this other than having a price point geared to the traveller with the company credit card.
If you do have a company credit card and it is not your company and you do not like the comapny you work for then ignore this review.

Dear Casualtraveller888,

Thank you for your review.
It's disappointing to read your impression of pricing as we conduct frequent competitor checks to make sure we are offering products in line not only with hotel standards but local bar standards. We certainly do offer some premium boutique beers that are more expensive than standard beers and also have the option of pint glasses that are nearly double a normal serve. The majority of the standard beers are around $8 and cheaper during happy hour from 5pm - 7pm every day. We do not receive feedback about our pricing with any regularity or we would of course have done something about it, as our absolute goal is to provide options and services that our guests need at rates that present value and promote repeat trade.
I do regret that your selection created this impression. It is indeed possible to buy two beers for $22 but not at all the norm nor indicative of our standard product pricing. We will of course note your feedback for when we next review the menu.

Yours Sincerely
Matt Anderson

We have just had a one night stay as part of a trip to Canberra for the Turner Exhibition. Check in was friendly and quick, but when we opened our room door, we found it had not been cleaned from the last guest. Rang down to reception and they quickly moved us to another room. Not a big thing, but should not happen. The rooms are well set out, without being big, but really all we needed. Very clean and nice view over the parks. Good work station with same view.
We were given a free voucher for two drinks and canapes after the mess up in the morning with the rooms. Nice touch, but the promised canapes never arrived so we left and went to dinner.
Breakfast is excellent, with a huge buffet and separate eggs station for that omlette, if you want. Good coffee and food.
