A great gallery which displays a number of portraits of Australians who have shaped our history. Well worth a visit when you. Art in the nation's capital.

“Inspiring”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2013

Such an inspiration to meet so many amazing Australians and their stories through portraits. Make this a must do when you visit Canberra. Deborah Mailman's portrait is wonderful.

“Don't miss the Avedon exhibition, it's closing soon!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2013

For reasons I don't understand, the portrait gallery doesn't do summer blockbuster exhibitions, instead doing lots of small exhibitions which it doesn't publicise much.
The current exhibition, Richard Avedon People, is the best temporary art exhibition (as opposed to simply the best photography exhibition) I've ever seen, so it's a bit sad that many people will never even know it was in town! On the other hand, one of the great things about the portrait gallery is that it's never crowded.
There are free tours of both the permanant collection and whatever temporary exhibition is on, the tour of the Avedon exhibition was brilliant, the guide was both very knowledgeable and very passionate - I must find time to take the permanant collection tour some time!
