Booked this restaurant from Melbourne many weeks in advance for a suprise 60th on recommendation from a friend.Couldnt be more pleased. From the owner, to the staff ,to the building, log fire and of course the superb menu where 11 people on the table all enjoyed everything that was served to them.Three cheers to all involved at the Green Herring!

“Underwhealmed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2013

Good value for money, but generally disappointed with the service. I made one simple request early in the meal, after which the quality of service plummeted and my guests and I weren't made to feel very welcome. Overall not a great experience.

“Excellent food, fabulous location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2013

The green Herring continues its tradition of fine food, in a lovely atmosphere. The food is great, the staff are attentive but discreet. Its a great place for dinner, with or without kids.

“Autumn special is indeed special”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 23, 2013

The Green Herring is a charming little place tucked away in Gold Creek in the ACT, with terrific atmosphere. We had the $29.00 per head autumn special. Two courses with optional desert was every inch value for money. The soup to start was full and flavoursome, I'm not normally a fan of veggie soup in any form, but this was tasty, creamy and not at all insipid. The chicken was beautifully cooked, moist, tender and not a hint of pink with the accompanying vegetables tasty and well selected. The rack of lamb was cooked to a "T" with a purée of babaganoosh and olive gnocchi gave a wonderful balanced flavour. I plead guilty to picking the bones. We opted for the homemade deserts (an extra cost but well worth it) the banana sticky pudding was light, with a well balanced sauce that didn't swamp the texture or flavour of the pudding. The peppermint and baileys chocolate spring rolls were a different experience, I'm not a coffee lover so the dipping sauce was left alone and the summary from the better half was very rich but oh so decadent ! All in all a lovely location, with great food, for a reasonable price with excellent service from Max and his crew.

“Excellent all-round lunchtime dining experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2013

We had been intending to book a dinner here for quite some time but never managed to get around to it. We just happened to be doing some shopping at Federation Square and so were (unusually for us) here on a Saturday at around noon. We saw the sign saying they are now open for lunch on Saturday between 12 and 3, and so we decided to seize the opportunity. And were not disappointed.
I really enjoyed the way they've done up the interior, it's got the old-time feel of Gold Creek so it is very cosy, plus there's a fireplace which we were happy to sit near due to the temperatures in Canberra dropping a bit recently. The waiting staff were excellent, efficient and helpful, the food was excellent, except we were a little disappointed that the pork belly could not be guaranteed to be gluten free, but we were appreciative that they guy at least told us; it would be far and away worse to have to suffer after eating gluten. But the beef salad tasted excellent and were a good alternative. Actually I thought my 'vegie stack' was a touch un-stack-like (not very high) but I wasn't complaining as I never eat a big lunch anyway. We decided to share a panna cotta for dessert (as the only gluten free option) and it was brilliant. Finished up with excellent macchiato and cappuccino, and left feeling having a very contented feeling and being very happy after the good service.
A really nice way to do lunch on a Saturday, we definitely must make the effort to go shopping in Gold Creek / Federation Square on a Saturday morning soon.
