“Magic in the hills of the Piedmont”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2009

Canonica di Corteranzo? This is the kind of place that, after you leave, you hope remains undiscovered, unspoiled and – until you return again – untouched by the passing of time. My wife and I spent several early summer days here for our 30th anniversary and it was, perhaps, the most romantic and sensual time we have ever spent together. The Monferrato area of the Piedmont region in Northern Italy is ablaze with fields of sunflowers at this time of year; the vineyards that cover the hillsides are already heavy-laden with grapes, and flowers are abloom in myriad window boxes. It is a pristine and nearly magical kind of beauty that is best enjoyed slowly like the food and wine that is produced here.

If that were enough – food, wine and beauty – then the Canonica would be an extraordinary place to stay. But Emma and Gabrielle Calvo have infused their hilltop villa with such warmth and charm that even today, as we remember the time we spent there, we practically pinch ourselves to prove that it was not just a dream.

The rooms are large and pleasant. Breakfast is a simple yet elegant affair. Relaxing by the pool that overlooks the villages and vineyards below makes leaving Corteranzo for day trips a difficult decision. But the sights of Turin, Genoa, Milan – even the lovely villages of the Italian Alps – beckon and each is less than a two hour drive away. When you return, there is wine to drink on the rooftop terrace and a gourmet dinner only a stones throw away at the wonderful Ristirante Cascina Martini.

We did manage somehow to leave the Canonica for good and spent several more days at a boutique hotel in Bellagio with a great view of Lake Como; we finished our trip with three nights in a five star hotel on the swank Via della Spiga in Milan. The entire trip was wonderful but, truth be told, if we did it again we’d spend our whole time at the Canonica. It is just that magical of a kind of place.

My wife and I cannot recommend this hotel enough. The property is beautiful ... the former home of a nobel family from Milan which was turned into a home for the local church's priest before the current owners renovated it. Gabrielle and Emma, the family who owns and runs the property, are the nicest people that we met in all of Italy.

Before I go further, the backstory. We arrived to Murisengo, Italy (Piedmont) at 8pm with reservation at another agriturismo a few kilometers away. Upon arrival, nobody was there to check us in and nobody was answering the phone. So, we're stuck in a small village in the middle of nowhere with no place to stay for the night. We went to a local pizzeria (the only restaurant open) and the owner called Emma at Canonica di Corteranzo to see if she could help us out. Honestly, our expectations for the property were pretty low ... but we didn't care. We just wanted a place to sleep at this point.

Imagine when our surprise, when we drive through this quaint/modest village and arrive at the most beautiful hotel that we stayed in during our trip to Italy! The building has been immaculately renovated inside and out and has first class services throughout (beautiful breakfast room, tabacco/scotch/card-playing room, family room with TV & internet, and spacious patio with chairs/tables to admire a wonderful view of Monferrato). This place is as nice as any first-class, small resort that I've visited anywhere in the world.

We ate breakfast our first morning and found that it was top-notch ... one of the nicest breakfasts that we had in all of Italy. Our room was large and was well-appointed with fine furniture and a very large bathroom.

We would rate this with a 5-dot 'Excellent' rating based on the resort alone, but Gabrielle and Emma's friendly service went above and beyond anything we've ever experienced at a hotel. They truly make you feel like one of their family (they live right next door) and give you full-run over the hotel property. We had luggage that was lost by the airline for several days, and Emma & Gabrielle let us use their phone to call and check on our luggage and kept us updated of any messages that came in. You could tell that they were truly engaged in helping us out in any way they could.

Finally, this is a perfect location for a vacation to the Piedmont region and Monferrato. Many people have never heard of this region, but it may have the finest food and wine in the world ... nevermind the beautiful landscape of rolling hills all trellised with centuries-old grape vines. It's truly a destination to savor, and we can't think of a better place to do it than at Canonica di Corteranzo.
