Myself and my partner stayed at Slaley Hall on Sept 9th for one night. We were greeted by lovely reception staff and our room was ready before check-in time, which was fab! I was told on the phone that they only had twin rooms but they would be able to change it into a double for us, although that was not actually possible. Not a huge deal as we booked pretty last minute. Our room was a good size, great coffee/tea making facilities and really clean with super comfy beds, what else can you ask for really! Our bottle of wine on arrival was red when we had asked for white but they promptly changed that for us. We went for a mid-afternoon swim...really fab! The swimming pool is really cool, and we felt totally relaxed in the sauna/steam room and jacuzzi. Most other guests seemed to be wearing hotel robes and slippers, although we weren't offered these and felt rather left out! Not sure how we missed this. I have to say I also felt really let down by the gentleman working on the pool bar, his customer service skills were rubbish and he put me in a bad mood. I asked for ice but he complained that he would have to go upstairs for it and so I recieved a warm apple juice. I was also really hungry, and seen a table of ladies eating lunch from plates with cutlery etc, but he told me the only thing to eat were cereal bars. I just got the feeling he couldn't be bothered. We then had deluxe pedicures booked...Cannot stress enough how amazing these were, I actually fell asleep I was so relaxed, our therapists did great jobs and were so friendly, and the room was really pretty. Also loved how you are welcome to chill out in the relaxation room before and after treatments, could have stayed there all afternoon. Our dinner I have to say was a disaster! When I called to book our stay I was speaking to a gentleman from the De Vere booking line, not the hotel directly as we had a Wowcher deal voucher and it told us to do so. However, this man didn't realise it seems you can only eat in certain restuarants on the deal, and so he booked us into the Duke's Grill which when we arrived appeared the most prestigious of all. After looking at the menu and noticing they served £65 steaks, I did question it. We were then mortified to have to leave our table a few minutes after sitting down with other guests staring and go by lift to another restuarant with a waiter. It seemed guests on deal trips are usually in Hadrian's Brasserie for dinner but they had an event or something! The place they moved us too usually just do lunch I think but were taking overspill guests such as us. We were offered a free drinks each for our trouble which was appreciated. Anyway the menu we finally received was really good, fair amount of choice, we had the ham terrine and soup of the day for starters. After our starters we decided we wanted chips as a side to accompany our mains, and were told there might be a slight delay as they weren't ordered together which was fair enough. However our chips came WAY before our mains and we were so hungry we had to eat them, it took 40 minutes for our mains to come, ridiculous!!! The restuarant wasn't even busy and it was 9.20pm by this point, however I didn't actually get to eat my dinner as the waiter dropped it down me as he was serving it...very annoyed! Luckily it managed to escape my clothes and hit the napkin on my lap and the table. He scooped it up and ran off without appologising or informing he would bring another. We then shared my partners dinner so it wouldn't go cold, she ordered the duck leg and potato cake with cabbage, very very yummy! It took about 15/20 minutes for my dinner to arrive which is maybe fair enough as I had the risotto and it must be made from scratch, and they did bring me a large portion but to be honest I've had best risotto, too thick. The waiter is fortunate I was really polite and didn't kick up a fuss about the whole thing. At breakfast there was loads of choice and the coffee was good, the bacon and black pudding were all dried out and pretty cold though. Overall we did have a lovely time, the place is beautiful and most of the staff are great. It's a shame that dinner was a disaster, I would stay again though as I know the spillage was a mistake!
Try and get a room with a high number such as 350 as they are near the lift, we were 312 and it was...
