My partner and I stayed 5 days at Mangueira in mid-January 2012 and we had a wonderful time. Gary and Juan, the new owners, have recently renovated the three existing bungalow and built two new double ones with unassuming good taste and style. Because we booked a bit late in the season, we had to move rooms in our third day and we had the privilege of experiencing both older and new bungalows. They were both super comfortable and beautiful in their own specific ways. The rooms have some structural features in common; all have verandas with hammocks, a breakfast table and a lounging area; all are private, with beautiful views, ceiling fans, and gorgeous garden surroundings. But each has its own charm, you know you're in a place which the owners took pride to customise, not your cookie-cutter kind of room common in so many pousadas and hotels.
Breakfast is brought to your veranda every morning by a cheerful Gary and one of their local assistants. It's delicious and gets you set for a while until you're ready for a late lunch in one of the local restaurants in one of the beaches.
There is also a common kind of open varanda living-room-bar-dinner space where Gary and Juan serve what they call a selection of light dinner meals to wrap you up for the night. The atmosphere is cozy but made sophisticated with indirect lighting. You'll also find a bookshelf from which you can borrow a book in case you forget to bring one.
In short, the place is beautiful, comfortable, well-cared for, but the most special thing about Mangueira is Gary and Juan. They are helpful in a non-intrusive way, they are fun to talk to and they make you feel extremely welcomed. I would look forward to hear Gary approaching our veranda carrying a large breakfast tray. He was busy, but always had time to tell us about places to go, the beaches, the restaurants, or about a local story, the latest news, lighting up our morning. Juan, was also a delight to talk to while he prepared our caipirinhas before dinner at the bar.
It was a wonderful trip to the island and staying at Mangueira made it all even more romantic and special. We shall be back, hopefully sooner than later.
