Yes, yes, Montigo Resort(s) is the newest and only 5 star hotel on Batam island, and it is somehow award-winning, despite having only just opened! But...
THINK TWICE about why you want to go there. Especially during the soft launch period, when it does not have 5 star facilities. You will have to wait until next year before it has a proper pool, a beach club and even a beach itsefl!
I'm not sure what families could enjoy doing, as there is only one restaurant open, no reading room/games room/function room/ and nowhere really to walk except to the resort next door to use their beach facilities (although Montigo Resort does provide cycling trips, at a rental price, that might provide family fun).
Yes, the apartments are spacious, but most of the space is in the master bed-room and its indulgent en-suite (which makes it a GREAT GETAWAY for COUPLES and romance of any kind). The bed, its linen, and the floor-ceiling view (from the bed) are luxurious.
However, the second room has 2 nice looking beds but not much room for anything else.
The living area / kitchen downstairs is reasonable but would entertain children for as long as you were prepared to have the TV / DVD player on! Or simply let the kids sit on the sofa playing with their ipads. The free Wifi access in the resort is a big plus (or is it??)
The patio, off the living area, is a nice area to sit, read, have a meal and go for occassional dips in the plunge pool (again, great for couples to relax and unwind), it might be okay for children older than 7 or 8, but the depth of the pool is about 1m and it has got relatively unproteced edges, so would be unsafe for younger kids.
As a couple, its is superbe to laze about in the plunge pool, looking out at the views, while having some food and fluid "sustenance" at will. (See our photos.) Beware that people looking down from nearby rooftop terraces get a good view of the plunge pools below, so decide how much you want to entertain them (and charge them) before putting on a show!
There's not much else to do on the rooftop terrace except admire the view, as the rooftops are very barren at the moment. Some weather-proof furniture and some potplants would make them more liveable areas. I fear that, at busy times, the resort could be quite noisy as people might gather on the rooftops to do stand-up activities involving only glasses and bottles of alcohol... (or, in our case - somebody shot firecrackers from their rooftop - for an hour one night at 9pm and then at midnight on the second night for 10 minutes before we complained!)
Speaking of parties... if you have "a quiet one" in the luxury of your bedroom, be careful when you are in the ensuite bathroom: There is a very inconvenient "lip" of about 3cm height where the floor beneath the vanity units is raised above the floor where the big bath tub is located. It's a poor design feature and I predict it will lead to a broken toe or two... but don't let them be yours!
THINK TWICE about your booking arrangements. Based on our experience, we would suggest that you "double confirm" everything that is seemingly arranged through the website or the Singapore office and bring print-outs of all communications (inc. reservation confirmations) to the reception at Montigo Resort. Beware that whatever you were quoted in SGD will be less than you actually get charged in the conversion to Rupiah on your final invoice. Ideally, you would use an Amex credit card to pay your invoice (as it has the best conversion rates of all credit cards). But, despite the website accepting Amex, and the reservation being made using our Amex card, on arrival we were told that Amex could not be used!
SERVICE WAS EXCELLENT: warm greetings, guests being addressed by their names, complimentary cake and wine for a special occasion, and great service recovery for the numerous "glitches". In our case, Duty Manager Ali Usman went out of his way to find me, apologise and make things right, after I'd fired off an angry e-mail over one of those reservation communication mix-ups.
We would STRONGLY RECOMMEND the free day trip to NAGOYA HILL MALL. It's a great place to shop, to eat, and to people-watch. And the friendly staff at Montigo will drive you there and back in a comfortable mini-bus, leaving at 10 am and returning at 4pm. (If you like strong massages, try out "Eska" on level 1. The gents there managed to release aching muscles that we've had for months, despite getting regular massages and spas in Singapore and elswhere on holidays.)
But DO THINK TWICE about going until Montigo have sorted out their various glitches...
Other reviews have pointed out some, but let me list some more "little things" that do add up when you're supposed to be at Batam's newest and only 5 star resort:
1. There's no icemaker in the small bar fridge. Sure, the "free minibar" (soft drinks and confectionaries) are nice, but a real fridge, with a decent ice-maker would be better! You have to call reception and wait for someone to bring a bucket of ice to your apratment if you want to chill a bottle of wine, or just put ice in your coke.
2. There was no bottle opener in our apartment...! In fact, there was a real lack of cooking, carving, and creating utensils.
3. The numerous doors and the skylight in the en-suite have 'gaps" everywhere, so that all manner of insects can come crawling in; mosquitoes being the most notorious. We did find a small collection of insect repellents in a bottom drawer in our bedroom as we were packing up to leave!
OVERALL, this is a unique resort in its concept. Some will delight in what it has to offer, others will not. So, continue to read all reviews until you get a balanced idea of whose compliments and whose criticisms would be likely to affect your stay (especially given that there are hundreds of reviews from a large sample of guests at the other top-ranking hotels in Batam (Which Montigo Resort does not want to compete with, at the moment hence they list themselves as a hotel in Nongsa!). Then think twice...!
