“Think Twice...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2012

Yes, yes, Montigo Resort(s) is the newest and only 5 star hotel on Batam island, and it is somehow award-winning, despite having only just opened! But...

THINK TWICE about why you want to go there. Especially during the soft launch period, when it does not have 5 star facilities. You will have to wait until next year before it has a proper pool, a beach club and even a beach itsefl!

I'm not sure what families could enjoy doing, as there is only one restaurant open, no reading room/games room/function room/ and nowhere really to walk except to the resort next door to use their beach facilities (although Montigo Resort does provide cycling trips, at a rental price, that might provide family fun).

Yes, the apartments are spacious, but most of the space is in the master bed-room and its indulgent en-suite (which makes it a GREAT GETAWAY for COUPLES and romance of any kind). The bed, its linen, and the floor-ceiling view (from the bed) are luxurious.
However, the second room has 2 nice looking beds but not much room for anything else.
The living area / kitchen downstairs is reasonable but would entertain children for as long as you were prepared to have the TV / DVD player on! Or simply let the kids sit on the sofa playing with their ipads. The free Wifi access in the resort is a big plus (or is it??)

The patio, off the living area, is a nice area to sit, read, have a meal and go for occassional dips in the plunge pool (again, great for couples to relax and unwind), it might be okay for children older than 7 or 8, but the depth of the pool is about 1m and it has got relatively unproteced edges, so would be unsafe for younger kids.

As a couple, its is superbe to laze about in the plunge pool, looking out at the views, while having some food and fluid "sustenance" at will. (See our photos.) Beware that people looking down from nearby rooftop terraces get a good view of the plunge pools below, so decide how much you want to entertain them (and charge them) before putting on a show!

There's not much else to do on the rooftop terrace except admire the view, as the rooftops are very barren at the moment. Some weather-proof furniture and some potplants would make them more liveable areas. I fear that, at busy times, the resort could be quite noisy as people might gather on the rooftops to do stand-up activities involving only glasses and bottles of alcohol... (or, in our case - somebody shot firecrackers from their rooftop - for an hour one night at 9pm and then at midnight on the second night for 10 minutes before we complained!)

Speaking of parties... if you have "a quiet one" in the luxury of your bedroom, be careful when you are in the ensuite bathroom: There is a very inconvenient "lip" of about 3cm height where the floor beneath the vanity units is raised above the floor where the big bath tub is located. It's a poor design feature and I predict it will lead to a broken toe or two... but don't let them be yours!

THINK TWICE about your booking arrangements. Based on our experience, we would suggest that you "double confirm" everything that is seemingly arranged through the website or the Singapore office and bring print-outs of all communications (inc. reservation confirmations) to the reception at Montigo Resort. Beware that whatever you were quoted in SGD will be less than you actually get charged in the conversion to Rupiah on your final invoice. Ideally, you would use an Amex credit card to pay your invoice (as it has the best conversion rates of all credit cards). But, despite the website accepting Amex, and the reservation being made using our Amex card, on arrival we were told that Amex could not be used!

SERVICE WAS EXCELLENT: warm greetings, guests being addressed by their names, complimentary cake and wine for a special occasion, and great service recovery for the numerous "glitches". In our case, Duty Manager Ali Usman went out of his way to find me, apologise and make things right, after I'd fired off an angry e-mail over one of those reservation communication mix-ups.

We would STRONGLY RECOMMEND the free day trip to NAGOYA HILL MALL. It's a great place to shop, to eat, and to people-watch. And the friendly staff at Montigo will drive you there and back in a comfortable mini-bus, leaving at 10 am and returning at 4pm. (If you like strong massages, try out "Eska" on level 1. The gents there managed to release aching muscles that we've had for months, despite getting regular massages and spas in Singapore and elswhere on holidays.)

But DO THINK TWICE about going until Montigo have sorted out their various glitches...
Other reviews have pointed out some, but let me list some more "little things" that do add up when you're supposed to be at Batam's newest and only 5 star resort:

1. There's no icemaker in the small bar fridge. Sure, the "free minibar" (soft drinks and confectionaries) are nice, but a real fridge, with a decent ice-maker would be better! You have to call reception and wait for someone to bring a bucket of ice to your apratment if you want to chill a bottle of wine, or just put ice in your coke.

2. There was no bottle opener in our apartment...! In fact, there was a real lack of cooking, carving, and creating utensils.

3. The numerous doors and the skylight in the en-suite have 'gaps" everywhere, so that all manner of insects can come crawling in; mosquitoes being the most notorious. We did find a small collection of insect repellents in a bottom drawer in our bedroom as we were packing up to leave!

OVERALL, this is a unique resort in its concept. Some will delight in what it has to offer, others will not. So, continue to read all reviews until you get a balanced idea of whose compliments and whose criticisms would be likely to affect your stay (especially given that there are hundreds of reviews from a large sample of guests at the other top-ranking hotels in Batam (Which Montigo Resort does not want to compete with, at the moment hence they list themselves as a hotel in Nongsa!). Then think twice...!

Room Tip: Ask to be furthest away from the construction (which is near the restaurant) Check everything in th...

Thank you for your feedback following your recent stay with us.

I am disappointed to note that you did not fully enjoy your stay with our limited facilities during our soft opening. We are currently working with the development team to have these available soonest. On a separate note, I am happy to hear that the service which you experienced was excellent and that our manager on duty had taken care of the challenges brought up to our attention. My sincere apologies for any inconvenience that we have caused.

Once again, thank you for sharing and we look forward to have the opportunity to welcome you back to Montigo Resort in the future.

We were lucky to stay here during the soft launching of the hotel. Overall, I would said that it is definitely worth it! The children love the pool in the villa. Everything was well equipped except that we had a few problems with the Aircondition in our room. If the price remind the same or only slightly higher with full facilities equipped, we might want to come back. Of course if you were to compare to BanYan Tree in Bali, it is not comparable at all.

We spent our National Day at Montigo Resort Nongsa. From our beautiful villa, we could see the landscape of MBS. An added bonus was that we could see some of the beautiful fireworks at the NDP from our villa.
Back to the villa, we stayed at the Hilltop Villa with the South China Sea view. As this is a relatively new resort (2 months old), the interiors and furniture were new and clean.
The master bedroom comes with an open air bathroom, with an over-sized bathtub and a separate shower area with rain shower. I loved their toiletries.
Besides the super comfy king-sized bed in the master bedroom, there is a nice sofa where one can just relax and daze.
The highlight of the villa will be the infinity plunge pool. This is a private plunge pool for each villa and so, this means you can jump into the pool at anytime you wish and without sharing the pool with others. My 8 year old boy loved the plunge pool.
As this is their soft launch, only 1 restaurant is opened. However, the food is not expensive and they tasted good, especially the Indonesian style food.
As for the check-in, we have arrived pretty early in the morning as the ferry services for the afternoon was full (probably due to National Day holiday). Although the villa was not ready for check-in, the receptionist was very kind to proceed with the "check-in" procedures while we wait for our complimentary shuttle service to Nagoya Hill, so that when we return from Nagoya Hill in the afternoon, we can check into our villa immediately. We were so glad that the receptionist (Ms Yeyen) was all ready waiting for us with our room key when we returned from Nagoya Hill. During our 3D2N stay at the Resort, Ms Yeyen remembered our name and addressed us by our name. Besides Ms Yeyen, we found all other staff very friendly and helpful (it is a pity we could not get all their names). For some, while fetching us from our villa, offered information on the activities going around the resort (e.g. cake decoration class, tennis class) and invited us to join in these activities.
If there is something negative about this resort, I guess it would be the construction work at the Resort. The dining table by the plunge pool is covered with a layer of dust which stops us from having our meal there.

It was an amazing getaway in Montigo Resort. Nothing literally to fuss about.

Service - I was there at 10am and the official check-in time was 2pm. I requested for an early check-in and they managed to get us one room at 12pm. Which is totally fine with me since it was our fault to arrive early even though it stated that the check -in time is 2pm. So, thumbs up for that. Very personal service, i totally love it.

Food - I love the food! Even though the included breakfast has only 2 options, but it was more than enough for us. We had dinner in the villa. The portion of the food is generous.

Ambience - Clean and simple. Love the plunge pool! I had so much fun!

I will return here again so long as the price is within my budget.

We took advantage of the soft launch opening to check out Montigo Resorts. Spent 2 nights with no regrets. The interiors are tastefully decorated, very spacious with fabulous sea-view. We loved the plunge pool. Service was prompt and I would like to give a shout-out to Yeyen Angida (Guest Svc Agent) who was very attentive to our needs. She even remembered my name!

We were pretty disappointed with the breakfast with only 2 options that came as part of the package but hey! its a soft launch and we will cut some slack. During the first night, we were woken up by mosquitos. LOTS of them but its a tropical resort so we were not too affected by it. Perhaps a mosquito net attached to the four post bed would solve the problem. Just a suggestion.

I had tenderloin steak for dinner the last night of the stay and it was SO good! Will not think twice to be back for another getaway!

It was an all-girls' time at Montigo. We loved the 2 bedroom and 3 bathrooms, the private pool where we chilled most of the time.

Nice touches were the free minibar, the Wii game (even though it was just one game), the kitchenette (stove, microwave, pots, plates, cutlery!).

Guests can take up the cycling/walking tours organised by the resort. Not very expensive. Staff were very friendly and never fails to make us feel at home.

Food choices are limited as they only have one restaurant. We took transport out to Rezeki for seafood.

All in all, a nice quiet place to not do anything except to watch the world sail by.

Thank you for your review following your recent stay at our resort.

I am happy to note that you and your guests were able to "wind down to serenity" whilst at the resort. Although we have limited facilities during this soft opening, however we have other alternatives available, including private dining experiences, private roof terrace barbeques, etc.. Please feel free to contact the resort staff for more selections of in-villas activities as well, including more Wii games, DVD library, board games, etc...

We certainly look forward to welcoming you back to Montigo Resort in the near future.

After reading many short write-up about this new “Luxury Resort at Batam” in a few local magazines, we decided to bring my daughter and mother there during their “soft-launch” period in August.

As this was my girl’s first yacht ride (she usually flies to other countries), she was really excited about it. And the fact that it was a private yacht transfer just make her first experience more memorable and interesting. In fact, we enjoyed the “luxury and fast” transfer too!

Our hill-top villa is spacious with 2 bedrooms and offer fabulous sea view. My girl enjoyed the plunge pool in our villa the most and she literally swam and “float” in the pool few times a day. We stayed in our villa most of the time, playing Wii console games, swimming & spending quality family time together as there’s no access to the beach and the kids’ club was not ready. We tried the spa too and it’s again a first spa experience for my girl as resorts don’t usually offer spa services for kids. She enjoyed her massage and was “giggling away” while the masseur massaged her.

Overall, it was an enjoyable and relaxing short trip. We will come back again when their kids’ club and beach club are opened since it’s just 20 minutes away from Singapore.
