“Disappointing.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2012

We stayed for one night and paid £90 for bed and breakfast in the four poster room.
Our positive points are as follows.
Pretty looking village and the pub is in a nice location with a well kept garden, plenty of parking and easy to find.
Swift check in with no card swiping required or paperwork to complete. We were given all the information we needed to let ourselves back in after hours and times for breakfast etc.
Our room was at the back of the pub overlooking the gardens and car park and not unduly noisy.
The bed was comfortable and the room had a good tv.
We enjoyed our full English breakfast.
Here are the negative points.
Unpleasant smell as you enter the pub from the rear door from the car park (possibly from the toilets.)
Our room felt cold when we entered it and the bathroom even more so. The heating did come on at times but it still felt cold when we came back late and got up in the morning.
The bed had clean sheets and the bathroom was okay but many other areas of the room were not. The skirting boards were grubby with some tea/coffee stains near the kettle and the trouser press was thick with dust. The damp patch with peeling wallpaper was just a previous reviewer has mentioned and our family members who stayed in the room next door said that their room was no better and that the fire alarm had fallen on the floor.
The general standard of the carpet, curtains and armchairs was shabby but not in a charming way to compliment the age of the property.
The bathroom fittings were basic and the shower water pressure sporadic.

We wouldn't stay here again or recommend it.

Booked this as we were going to see Kenny Thomas in Gravesend and didnt fancy staing in a chain hotel.
Room was nice we had a double with ensuite

Weather was good so we had lunch in the beer garden from the Mr Bumbles Bar BBQ.

Good full English in the morning.

Staff very pleasant

We stayed for one night in room 6. This is a lovely double aspect room overlooking the beer garden. The only downside of the room was a generator or air conditioning unit outside which went on and off at regular intervals during the night. You get used to it though. Check in was efficient and friendly. We enjoyed Pimms in the garden along with a cream tea - although i would say that the charming Australian (not too good with accents) needs to brush up on making a Pimms. Less of the orange, lemon and lime slices and more of the strawberries, cucumber and mint! Anyhoo, very delicious. Cream tea was with thick double cream and not clotted cream, but still as tasty. There is an outside bar bit (Mr Bumbles??) which was serving drinks and barbeque stuff.

We enjoyed a pleasant evening meal although by the time we sat down (8.30) a lot of the items on the menu had sold out. Thsi is probably due to the menu being the same in the main 'posh' restuarant as the one inside the pub and outside inthe beer garden. Luckily there was enough left on the menu for us to order and enjoy. Wine was fine. We ended up being the last people in the restaurant but no one made us feel hurried or in the way.

The four poster was very comfortable with delightful bedding and the ensuite bathroom was absolutely huge. There was some damp damage in one corner of the bedroom ceiling but that really didnt matter at all.

The villlage is a three pub and no shop affair but the church is pretty and some nice walks. Cobham Manor School a short drive away has the most magnificent grounds and well worth taking time to wander around, free of charge. Really spectacular building and gardens.

Breakfast was good - lovely mushrooms. check was quick, i wasnt shown a run down of my bill, but i am sure it was correct.

I might possibly agree about the run down toilet in the public bar area, but to be honest, pub toilets are not generally top of my 'what is wrong with this place' list unless they are really rank. Just keep them clean and make sure the hand dryer works and/or hand towels are available.

All in all a very good value stay in a charming Dickensian pub.

Room Tip: Go for one of the four poster rooms

What a dirty worn out, way past it sell by date establishment! Staff unbelievable RUDE.. arrived around 11pm to be told they had NO reservation for me - yet it was booked and confirmed on Hotels.com (since got a refund) If reception was anything to go by, then maybe it was a blessing in disguise as the place was so so very dirty - makes you wonder what the rooms and matressess are like!

Room Tip: Go to a different hotel!

This has to be one of the best country pubs in England, serving great food, afternoon teas, guest beers, lovely Pimms etc. It's also a small hotel, some rooms with 4 poster beds and with an excellent breakfast. The building, garden and setting are beautiful, steeped in Dickensian history. Very friendly and welcoming, extensive menu choice from bar food to formal and private dining - all at excellent value for money. I've enjoyed every stay and every visit for food over the last 2 years since discovering the Leather Bottle. I've read some of the reviews and can honestly say my family's experience has been very different - including a super Mothers Day lunch for 10. Really excellent. Location-wise, it's great for Brands Hatch, very convenient for the Tunnel and Dover - also London esp via fast train from Ebbsfleet, and by car for shopping at Bluewater and the outstanding Ashford Outlet centre. Overall, its an excellent gastro-pub with a very friendly and welcoming team, exceeding my expectations of a country pub.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with 4 poster bed!

The Leather bottle is a friendly run establishment, staff are excellent and Brian and Sue made our stay special. Complementary Champagne and Strawberries in our room for our wedding anniversary. Brian and Sue couldn't do enough for us and Sara the manager was very attentive. Gardens are beautiful and pub situated in a lovely location. Bar staff were friendly. Food was excellent couldn't fault it at all. Going back in August.

Room Tip: All rooms are oldie worldie, kept with the theme of the hotel.
