A new Aladdin's cave for Whitehead. A must see place that sparks the imagination of any creative thinker. Its a place of , " How cleaver is that idea" , new things made from old familiar objects. A place of every turn brings another "ohhhh look at that" Delightful :-)

“Great for the town”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2013

This is a very welcome addition to the many highlights of Whitehead. The bank moved out, and the grand old listed building was bought and turned into a far friendlier place by Sinead. Inside you'll find a lot of paintings, plus craft arts, a museum with lots of books about local history you can browse for free, and maps and other curiosities. They also run a kids program, an adults painting class, embroidery classes and a crafty Friday morning where anyone can come and be creative together. The garden outside now looks so much better, and its a great place to visit.

“Very welcoming”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2013

The Bank House has just opened for business and is a charming and very welcome addition to the Edwardian heart of Whitehead. They are sited in what was a big bank building, hence the name. It is one of the grandest and oldest pieces of architecture in the town, so to see it back in use is great. They've repainted the door on Kings Road and also all of the newer part of the building - you enter there, on Edward Road. Just changing it from a dull blue to a sunnier colour lifts the whole place nicely.

Sinead the owner is always there and is very friendly. They sell all sorts of gifts, and run arts and crafts classes for adults and children. You can sit on a friday morning and do your choice of craft with the people who gather there, over a cup of tea. They have some local art and photography on show, and a history section where you can see how Whitehead looked in bygone days. You can even find pictures of the bank building, the towns churches, or the Old Tea House which look today just like they did a hundred years ago. The place is quite large, but you can find all sorts of corners with interesting woven art, or bespoke jewelry, or glass art. It has windows to catch the sun all around three sides.

The only day they close is Sundays, and they open until half past five every evening, and later on Thursdays. Be sure to call in and say hello.

“Call & See The War Memorial Painting.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2013

A great place to browse and see the local arts and crafts. The war memorial watercolour and folder of information about Whitehead's War heroes is great to see. A bronze statue of a soldier has recently been added which stands proudly beside the painting. Lovely to see such an old building being cared for. I even got a cup of tea and some cake when I called in.

“Brand new history!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2013

This place was opened 13 days ago by local historian and author P.J. O'Donnell. Rightly so, because it includes the first ever museum section anywhere in Whitehead. You'll find a selection of books there that include all those he's written on the history of the town (they are not on sale, just there for anyone to enjoy). A bonus is a selection of old views of the town from a century ago on post cards. This is a very appropriate venue, because The Bank House itself has taken over the most central and significant secular building in the town. Paddy O'Donnell's book says it opened as a bank in 1905; The Bank House is currently operating in the 1974 extension to the building. It is a very welcome addition to the town's many attractions. The history section is also currently hosting a tribute to the town's War dead that consists of a painting, plus a folder with the stories of those lost in the World Wars.

A great variety of art is also on display in The Bank House. You'll find paintings of local scenes, framed photographs, some very cute woven art pictures and fine art ranging from abstracts to brilliant bugs made of busted watches and bits of jewelry. Over the main counter is a reproduction of a poster promoting Whitehead, dating back before 1900. Look at it closely - Blackhead Lighthouse hadn't been built back then!

The owner, Sinead, is very friendly and helpful. The place is already hosting classes, a kids' art club, and free Friday craft mornings where people can gather and create things together. Well worth a visit.
