4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2012

The guest house was easy to find and had plenty of parking. Staff gave a friendly welcome and were very helpful recommending places to eat etc. The room was small but had everything we needed for the weekend - and most importantly was clean. The room was not en suite but all the communal bathrooms (there are a few) were kept very clean. There is also a well equiped communal kitchen where you can make drinks and keep food in the fridge. Breakfast was great. You can see right into the kitchen and it too was spotlessly clean.

Found on line last minute to come to Southampton to see the three Queens arrive for the Jubille, warm welcome lovely clean room nice and quiet and a fab breakfast in the morning. Great value for money and we were shocked it is only 2 star, should be 3! :-) would definitely stay again.

Stayed here for two nights with my girlfriend whilst my ship was in port in Marchwood. All we wanted was somewhere to sleep whilst we had the opportunity to spend time together before the ship sailed again.

We stayed in one of the more expensive en suite rooms, however this was only £99 for two nights including a fantastic breakfast, and free wi-fi. The room was ideally sized and the bed, although two singles pushed together was more than adequate for our needs and the linen was clean. Shower room was small but functional and again, most importantly, was clean. I had a look at the communal facilities for the rooms that did not have en suite, and these two were of a high standard of hygeine.

This is not going to win any awards for having great views, bur for convenience and value it is hard to beat, and its close enough to all the local attractions; around £10 for a txi to Southampton city centre; but the train station is only a five minute walk away so that leaves options, too.

Stayed one night at the Brimar. The Guest House is within 2 -3 minutes walk from Totton station, and by train only five miuntes from Southampton Central.
I needed to be in Totton early for a meeting, but its location means that the Brimar is close enough to Southampton to make this economical (£38 single occupancy ensuite) guest house viable for those setting out on cruises and needing an overnight stay.
The Guest House has a mix of ensuite and shared facility rooms. My ensuite room had all that was required for an overnight stay, and a large and comfortable bed. It was not luxurious, but was clean and tidy.
There is no tea and coffee making facilities in the room, but this is more than made up for by a well equipped kitchen on the first floor, where hot drinks can be made at any time. There is also a microwave, and a very relaxed attitude to bringing in microwavable meals / takeaways from outside, which can be eaten in your own room, using plates / cutlery etc from the kitchen.
A varied breakfast, including the option of a substantial cooked breakfast is available in the breakfast room on the ground floor. All staff met during my visit were helpful and courteous.

Very good value if you're looking for an en suite room near Southampton. In fact this hotel probably comes into its own if you're staying for a while - there's a kitchen for guests with a microwave and hot drinks machine (although unfortunately this was out of order when I was there; they were making hot drinks at reception although obviously you couldn't get them when reception was closed). No laundry service, though.

Do bear in mind that it isn't in central Southampton - it's in Totton (in the greater Southampton area), about 5 mins by train into Southampton Central station. If you arrive by train from Southampton, the hotel is on the same side of the railway tracks that you get out of the train on (if you ask passers-by directions to 'High Street' they may actually direct you to a different street on the other side of the railway line).

Reception normally closes for check-in at 7pm but they may be able to accommodate late arrivals if you get in touch with them.

  • Liked — comfortable bed/pillows
  • Disliked — reception opening hours
