“Very nice experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2010

This place is part of a larger group of cabanas but must be the best I believe. It's cheap, offers very nice, spacious and clean rooms. Friendly landlady, kept our room while we reserved over the phone and had a late arrival. Very good food and atmosphere (music, dancing) at the Don Mucho restaurant.

Drove in with our rental car and had a bit of trouble finding the place - it's part of El Pachan right outside of the entrance to the Zona Archeaological - follow the signs right to the ruins entrance, then turn left into El Pachan, drive over the little bridge and follow the driveway as far as you can (ignore the private property signs, and yes your little rental car can make it over the bridge!) Everything looked a little dingy and sketchy but...once we found the reception area staff was very helpful and we got our cabana in the rainforest! Very clean and nice fan! Restaurant (Don Muchos) has lovely fresh-squeezed juice and excellent pizza, also great live music at night. We ended up staying here again on our way back to Cancun, and since it was very very hot that day we got an apartment room with A/C - huge and beautiful room though a bit musty. The Palenque ruins were a highlight of our almost 3 week trip in Mexico!

We had a wonderful time in Palenque and Margarita and Ed’s contributed to it. This place has it all, good location, nice sized - clean rooms and friendly owners, who could almost anticipate our needs (taxi, food advice, etc.)

We strongly recommend M&E’s Cabanas to whoever is looking for a comfortable stay with a warm service in the middle of the jungle surrounded by many tropical birds and exotic plants.

I opted for one of the A/C rooms in the building out back, a "splurge" by El Panchan standards but a deal compared with most other places.

It was a simple, clean room: beds, table, fan, A/C, bathroom, a picture on the wall. That's about it. It was secure and I found it to be bug-free. Neighbors, however, cautioned me to check for scorpions, and they showed me a picture of a 3" beauty they'd just found in their bed. Yikes.

I must've had the same room as the previous reviewers. The toilet was the most lethargic I've ever encountered, but it did manage to flush, just barely. I assumed it was adjusted to use the least amount of water possible, to avoid overloading the septic system. It was a miracle of low-flow functionality - though I didn't dare drop any paper in there.

And ha, I didn't even need the A/C. It actually got chilly at night, and I went out with a jacket on.

Oh, and I had no problem getting my key deposit back; 100 pesos in this case.

Found this place in a jungle like setting well out of our comfort zone but fun just the same. Our room was clean and bedding/towels replaced every day. Stayed for three days. Only one complaint and that was the toilet was not functioning - would barely flush liquids let alone anything else. Our complaints resulted in being asked for several hours for them to do "maintenance". On our return the toilet was no different. This was definitely a bad situation everyday for three day. Upon our departure we went to retrieve our 50 peso deposit for keys - we were refused. My husband argued and the worker asked if the toilet worked and we said no. Then he wanted to charge us for damaging the toilet by putting paper in it. We denied that we had placed any paper in the toilet and after a lenthy arguement they finally returned our 50 pesos. This was the only downside of this place - otherwise we had a blast and would do it again. It was a wonderful experience that we will recommend to anyone.

Excellent place to stay in El Pochon close to Palenque ruins just outside Palenque town. We stayed in an en suite cabana which was very comfortable and very clean. The shower had ample hot water and good water pressure. The only drawback is that the soundproofing was very poor with the cabana next door as it is in the same building and shares the same roof with a thin dividing wall. It might be best to upgrade to a private room in one of the brick buildings.

The location would be my first choice in Palenque as it is situated in the rain forest in El Pochon and Palenque town does not offer much. There are restaurants nearby in the same complex.

All in all, highly recommended.

We were pleasantly surprised by Margarita & Ed's Cabanas. The room was large and clean, with a double bed, table with chairs, kitchen area (cooker not plugged in though - not that we'd want to cook anything anyway!) and a big bathroom with good shower.

The place was clean and secure, with bars on all the windows. It was one of the cheapest places we stayed in Mexico at £15 / $25 too. We didn't detect any bugs, which is surprising, considering the location. The place looked quite recently decorated. Couldn't really hope for anything more from a place near the ruins to crash.

Al Panchan is a fun place to stay, with a good restaurant (Don Muchos - try the pasta, it's great). Getting to the ruins is also easy - just stand at the end of the drive and flag a collectivo. The town is quite horrible, so Al Panchan is definitely the place to stay!
