“Clean and cheap.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2011

Lets be honest, there are not many places to choose from in Villahermosa, especially if you are on a budget. Hotel Oriente is a well run, centered and clean hotel, but don't expect any charm. There is free drinking water and the people at the reception are friendly. The building is on a busy street, not far from the bus terminal, but you still need a cab. That turned out to be a huuuuuuge problem for us since we came in during the hours of "trafico" and there were no cabs available (even thought there are so many cabs in Villahermosa). Also beware that many cabs in Villahermosa are "colectivo" which means they take various passengers and charge you less, but if you are not going the way the others are, the cab just won't take you. A cab from the hotel to La Venta (the park with Olmec heads) is about 30 pesos.

Room Tip: Two beds rooms have windows to the street which gives you more light but also more noise. However, d...

We spent just the one night here and found it fine. The room was clean, had functioning air con, hot water and cable tv. I would stay here again.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2007

We (two senior ladies) stayed here for 3 nights in mid March 07. It was recommended in the Lonely Planet Mexico, it was right in the Zona Luz (downtown tourist area), and it was cheap . . . we gave it a try.

We had room 25 on the second floor (third to us). We had two double beds, table/chair, dresser, tv w/remote (100 pesos, $9 deposit for the remote), a/c and ceiling fan, big shower with good water pressure (our best of the trip), and the tiniest sink you’ve ever seen . . . but we did have hot water in it! The Oriente was 360 ($32.73) w/air; 280 ($25.45) w/out.

The room was clean, the beds were good, but the a/c barely put out any air, much less cooled. We got the desk clerk to come up and push buttons/flip switches and he said it would be cool in 15 minutes . . . nope.

We left the a/c on and went out to explore. We returned at night and the room was not cool. We asked to move to another room but even though we saw/heard no one else, he said no a/c rooms were available.

Since the weather cooled off some at night, we were pretty comfy with just the ceiling fan. The next a.m., we said we would stay in our room if we could pay the "fan" price and he said OK.

This hotel is in a great area, just a block or two from the malecon and all the other tourist sites except the Parque La Venta. We needed a taxi to it but a taxi anyplace in town was only 15 pesos ($1.36).

This is a pretty basic budget hotel but it was fine for a couple of nights.
