“Try to avoid Villahermosa and this hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2012

We stayed one night in Villahermosa coming from Campeche and going to Canon del Sumidero. Villahermosa is an ugly city with nothing to do in the centre of the city. First the pros of Hotel Madan: it is located right in the city centre and the room was clean. You have a TV and WIFI in the rooms. BUT: the hotel itself does not look nice, the room was very small with just a tiny window facing the next room. The staff does not speak English, they did not try to understand our poor Spanish - they had no intention to communicate with us in any way. We had dinner and breakfast at the hotel (in fact we did not find any other place that looked nice for a meal) and the menue is written only in Spanish. The food was ok, nothing special but you could eat it. If I had to stay in Villahermosa again I would choose a hotel outside the city near the Parque Venta as the city of Villahermosa is really not worth visiting. Hotel Madan was definatley the worst hotel on our tour through Mexico!

The hotel was adequate for our trip, it has got nice big clean rooms. The bar downstairs can get a bit loud if you are staying on that side of the hotel.

Our main problem was that we booked two rooms through expedia for a certain price and when we arrived at the hotel, we discovered that they had a rate nearly $30 usd cheaper than the one we used to book. We were in fact paying more than the rate advertised for the executive rooms and we only got the normal rooms.

We challenged the staff so as to find out the cause for the inconsistency and they said that it was the rate we used to book and that there was nothing they could do to help. We asked to cancel the booking and to have the cheaper rate, but they alleged that there was a cancellation charge that would make our stay a lot more expensive regardless.

We usually book through expedia and have found no other experiences like this one. We would definitely advise other travellers to stay away from this hotel, specially if booking online. If you do decide to go, just turn up or phone to book.

  • Liked — Cleanliness
  • Disliked — Inconsistency in room rates from online to those in the hotel

We stayed here after arriving in Mexico. There's really nothing for tourists in the city. This hotel was centrally located near a bank to change money, a grocery store, and a few eateries. We found outdoor music a few streets away and had beer outside. Few people speak English, and tourists really stand out. As a woman, I quickly changed to pants as I was getting so many glances. Not creepy, just obviously a tourist. Breakfast in the hotel was fine, they also have a lounge/bar.

$595 pesos bought a clean room with decent air conditioning and free parking. We were on the top level and had no noisy disco issues, though we did stay on a Sunday/Monday night.

In Villahermosa, we loved the La Venta Museum but not much else.

Nice room, good location, excellent restaurant. Everything you'd want in a hotel except the most important thing: a good night's sleep. The bass beat coming from the bar below our room was more than just loud, you could actually feel it through the floors, in fact right through the bed. Sleep was impossible until it finally ceased at 4AM! We cancelled our reservation for the next night, got a refund (after considerable pounding on the counter of the front desk) and left, vowing never to return to the hotel, or to Villahermosa, period.

On a french touist guide recommendations and en route to Cancun from Mexico, I treated myself with my most expensive hotel stay. I did mention prior to taking the room I wanted something specifically quiet and the staff blatantly lied as they told us to rest assured it would be the case. We were put in a room above the lobby It wasnt too bad and cleverly didnt overlook the noisy and traffic congested street. However, the disco was blaring all night under us until 2 or 4 AM but that was the good part. The room was situated next to a courtyard with a water pump that flushed up water intermittently all night through for an air conditioning system in the lobby I suppose. this pump felt like an alarm call every four minutes. just the time to doze away and be startled by the noisy engine. A sleepless nightmare !
I invited the manager in the morning in the room for first hand hearing and asking her how she would have felt if she had been in our place. Her apologies were minimal and nothing was done to repair the damage of my worst paying night experience . She did admit some complaints had been previously made. what did they do to change things? nothing. and with this steady stream of tourists booking through guides why woulf they bother with an unhappy customer?

The cab driver, and it was pouring rain, said it was safe and clean, but suggested elsewhere. We kept our reservations. For us, it really worked. Priced right.

Very central. Walking distance to everything. Lots of places to eat whatever we wanted.

Villahermosa is one big bustling metropolis and has lots of good hotels. If you want a real classy place, go someplace else.

If you want to get around without a cab, try this. We stayed there twice and will stay there again, I hope.

The front desk staffing helped a lot.
