“Nice but think we caught them on an 'off day'”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2014

We were disappointed on arrival to be told there was a problem in the kitchen as looking forward to an Italian meal was one of the reasons we booked. Maybe the problem affected to ambience of the place as we felt the welcome wasn't as enthusiastic as we'd hoped.
Was also a little disappointed considering the price we paid that a cooked breakfast was subject to an additional charge.
Despite this, I have to say the continental breakfast was lovely, the rooms are thoughtfully decorated and spotlessly clean, and the house and setting are wonderful.
Enjoyed our stay, just left wanting that little bit extra

Visitors from USA, and seasoned travelers exploring the southwest we came across Tredethy House online and decided to book for one night. We loved it so much we decided to stay for three nights. As soon as we walked in the door we were greeted by Marco, the incredible host. Music playing gently in the background, and the tasteful decor of the spacious lounges lent a wonderful ambience. Our room was lovely, spacious, comfortable, with awesome views of the grounds and the landscape beyond. Dinner was a choice of exquisite home made pastas, breakfast was a perfect continental spread, everything organic.
A jewel in the countryside, we will recommend this hotel to our friends and we will definitely come back.

A beautiful, remote country house with a charming garden and gorgeous views across the camel valley, Tredethy House has a quirky, romantic charm all of its own. It was wonderfully quiet, the silence broken only by birdsong, and the perfect place to get away from it all. Location wise, it’s very central for east Cornwall, and only about an hours drive to St Ives and thereabouts if you wanted to head further west. The house is elegant, but very relaxed and informal, and we felt welcome to wander around, or lounge about reading as if at home. Our room, which was one of the smaller rooms to the back, was very comfortable and clean, with a pleasant view over a small courtyard. The continental breakfast was lovely and very generous, with home-made yogurt being just one of the thoughtful touches reminding us that some real care and love goes into running the house. Cooked breakfast is available on request and for a supplement, but we didn't feel we needed it as there was plenty of very good food on offer.

If the house had been run in an anonymous fashion, we would have been content enough as it was so beautiful and comfortable, but the icing on the cake had to be Marco, the owner. Marco made us feel very welcome and is a warm, kind and engaging host, his generosity matched only by his superlative Italian cooking. The Trattoria is usually open for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays, but on Wednesday morning Marco decided to cook in the evening. My tip would be to check whether Marco is cooking before you head out, as, if you want to eat in the Trattoria, it’s better to choose your food ahead and make sure you have a table booked. This was no trouble at all, and we were treated to home-made asparagus ravioli in a sage butter, and a delicious chocolate cloud cake with blueberries and fresh cream prepared by Marco’s wife Christina. The atmosphere was lovely and it made for a very relaxed evening slowly eating and drinking, and watching the light fade over the beautiful view without being hurried to leave. We were quite disappointed to miss out on Thursday’s dinner because we had already booked to go to Rick Stein’s. I was tempted to cancel Rick Stein.

The menu is small, being freshly prepared and locally sourced, and was largely vegetarian, but as committed carnivores we didn’t feel in the slightest bit deprived, particularly on Friday when we opted for home-made ricotta-filled gnocchi with fresh pesto sauce. I couldn’t stop eating it. The portion was generous and filling, but I could have had seconds and thirds just because it was so more-ish. Christina’s Italian lemon cheesecake with lemon curd was divine.

The drinks menu was thoughtful, with tasty Italian organic wines, and a couple of organic beers we hadn’t tried before – one English, one German, both very good. Being neither Vegetarian myself, nor a particularly discerning shopper when it comes to organic food, I nonetheless really appreciated the thought and care that had gone into choosing the food and drink, and Marco’s knowledge and enthusiasm for it was very uplifting.

We were very sorry to leave Tredethy House- particularly on a Saturday, when we had to miss out on the prospect of another tempting dinner in the evening – but we will definitely return, and this time it will be like visiting old friends.

Room Tip: The rooms at the front are worth the extra cost because of the stunning view and the larger size. Ho...

This is a really quirky place- more like a small hotel than a b&b- I think there are 11 rooms. Marco the host is good fun. Downstairs is furnished in a lovely shabby chic style inc the Trattoria restaurant we ate in on site serving simple but tasty Italian food- 3 course £19.50. The room we had was very clean although a little worn- it was quite chilly so maybe cold in the winter months. Breakfast is only served for one hour- don't be late- there may not be much left towards the end of the hour! Great location- be sure to visit Paul Jackson the potter and his garden by the bridge-it Ida delight!

We stayed here for 2 nights last weekend. We were made very welcome even though it was out of season and we were the only guests. We had the very large principle room at the front of the house which had gorgeous views it was exceptionally spacious and very clean. Marco the owner was a fantastic host and nothing was too much trouble and we actually spent the Saturday evening enjoying his company. (also a mention to Alison who served our breakfasts who was lovely too) a very relaxing enjoyable stay and a good base to see Cornwall : )

Far beyond expectations. Hidden away and difficult to find (especially on a cold, wet winter's night with a gale blowing) but a beautiful location and a fine house. Exceptionally friendly and welcoming owner, Marco, made our visit a real joy. Highly recommended

We had not booked our last nights accommodation and found Tredethy House on tripadvisor. We were very impressed. The grounds and the house were stunning despite a particularly bleak day; we had a lovely spacious room and a warm welcome. Unfortunately the restaurant was not open that night but we were given several recommendations that worked out really well. It was a continental breakfast and very generous and I would love to go back and try the restaurant.
