“One of a Kind...”

A one of a kind experience all around. The highlight - we sat in the hot tub drinking wine and watched the stars break out from behind a blanket of cloud, followed by an off-full moon that lit up the landscape and made it appear as though it was covered in snow. Simply beautiful.

Room Tip: We stayed in the apartment though the cottages seem to have the best views from indoors so I would g...

Absolutely thought the place was beautiful. The grounds were amazing and the cottages just gorgeous. Everything we needed for our wedding anniversary hideaway from sun hats to mossie coils (for the outside BBQ area) Absoultely top marks!!! We were in the little cottage which was gorgeous. Just loved the decor. I would definately recommend this beautiful place. My only negative comment was that there was a function on that night (of which we were made aware of at the time of booking) however, when we arrived we did feel that Trudy was pre-occupied with organising the function and felt that her greeting was less than welcoming and instantly made us feel uncomfortable. John was lovely - thank you for showing us around.

Very relaxing. Flowers were beautiful in december. View of the beach is extraordinary. Very gracious hosts. A piece of paradise. Very close to Auckland yet completely in nature. Grocery store is 20 minutes away in cute little village. Thanks!!!

Wood fire pizza with the most wonderful setting with friend, We had a ball. Not hard to see why its a pop spot to get married on Auckland door step, 100 meters below the stress level of Auckland.
It my hide away.

My husband and I traveled from California (US) for our honeymoon in mid-October and stayed at the Wairua Apartment in Bethells for 3 nights. There are 2 other (larger) cottages on the property called Turehu and Te Koinga.

Pros
-A place to get away from city life
-Beautiful scenery and cliff side views
-Remote and Private
-The Wairua cottage worked well for the 2 of us since there's only 1 Bedroom with 1 Queen size bed
-The cottages are owned by a nice couple: John & Trude, who are 5th generation to the Bethell family land. They live in their own cottage next to the Wairua Apartment, but we had no problems with privacy.
-We used the Scandinavian Hot Tub and it was so relaxing! It was a Huge perk to also have gorgeous views out to the ocean, mountains, greenery etc.
-Washer is free to use; its located in the large bathroom (there's no dryer but there's some clothesline clips and a heater and towel warmer)
-About a 10 minute walk down to the Te Henga Walkway (hiking trail)
-We parked our car in right in front of our front door!
-Free WiFi
-We interacted with John mostly and he was so easy going and friendly. He let us borrow his adapter because we forgot to bring one to charge our cell phones, tablets, etc. He lent us a detailed map to find our way around town easily, and also provided us with recommendations for places to eat.
-Its a very quiet area and neighborhood
-3 nights was the perfect amount of time for us to unwind
-We got so lucky and were invited to join a dinner event with a family who occupied the other 2 cottages - they hired a pizza maker so we had a chance to eat custom pizzas made directly from the Bethells outdoor wood fire pizza oven! It was a fantastic, once in a lifetime experience.

Cons
-Must have a car to get around
-Its about a 1 hour drive from Auckland airport, through some narrow, windy roads
-The cottage was a bit difficult for us to navigate to; best to follow Trude's instructions closely
-Its about a 20-30 minute drive into town (we went to Henderson) for restaurants or grocery stores
-The bathroom toilet handle took us some time to figure out, but once we realized how to use the lever with the right amount of patience, it flushes quite well
-Unlike the website photos, I view the cottage as quaint, rustic, and aged.

Side notes:
-In the bedroom, they provided the following: 2 white bath robes, extra blankets, sarongs, about 10 wooden hangers, small TV with local channels on a rolling stand, a small collection of books on the bookshelf above it, hairdryer, a floor heater (which we did not need to use). To my surprise, the blankets on the bed kept me warm enough; I generally complain about being cold but I was pretty content.
-In the living room space, they provided the following: hats, stereo with speakers, small roll up picnic blanket, coffee table, telephone for local calls, magazines, maps and folder with some information about the cottage
-In the kitchen area, they provided the following: Fridge with freezer, small jug of milk, utensils, microwave, dishes/plates, knives, pots, pans, oven mitts, kettle, glassware, paper towels, Tea bags, dish soap, dish towels. We cooked a few times for breakfast and dinner and felt we had everything we needed
-Pantry: Wine bottles are available but charged extra if opened/consumed. Condiments like oil, pepper, tomato sauce (aka ketchup) for guests to use if needed
-In the bathroom/shared laundry space, they provided the following: plenty of towels, laundry detergent, extra toilet paper, travel size shampoo and conditioner, and a small soap bar to use throughout the time of our stay (keep in mind its not replaced daily like in hotels)
-Outside: BBQ was available but we did not use it, patio seating with 3 chairs and a table
-We opened our french doors on a warmer sunny day and it was great to enjoy the breeze in the living space
-Guests can play croquet on the lawn or table tennis in the common room
-There's a mosquito net above the bed but we did not have to use it; the cooler temperatures seemed to keep all the bugs away
-Sign the guestbook. Its great to read prior guests' feedback about their stays!

Happy Travels!

I live in the Western Australian desert, red dust and scrubby trees as far as the eye can see. Bethell's Beach Cottages is the exact opposite, and was exactly what I needed for my holiday. The hosts were so helpful and friendly, and really knowledgeable. The beach itself and surrounding area is absolutely incredible, and so magical. I loved the setting, the kiwi bach feel of the cottages, and the fact that it is owned locally and not run by a big corporation. Am definitely coming back again.

We stayed one night recently after finding out we had mutual links to the Bethell Ancestry back in the UK. Emailed after booking made to introduce ourselves and ask if we had to bring food for our evening meal or could it be available on arrival, as we were arriving late from Sydney. Received a reply, but no mention of dinner or food or what may be required for us to buy for one night's stay. So en route found small supermarket and grabbed a couple of frozen dinners and some breakfast. Arrived after long drive from airport and found John, who showed us to our cottage. Delightful spot, very secluded, small jug of milk in fridge. Tea bags & coffee provided on request. Some bottles of wine were in cottage on a shelf, but all priced accordingly. John showed us a bush track which lead to the beach if we wished to walk down whilst there.
Next morning on leaving called at the home but unfortunately Trude was in town.
From our point of view the cottages are certainly in a remote area and although having the necessary facilities, the webpages overplayed what we saw or were shown of the property.
