My husband and I traveled from California (US) for our honeymoon in mid-October and stayed at the Wairua Apartment in Bethells for 3 nights. There are 2 other (larger) cottages on the property called Turehu and Te Koinga.
-A place to get away from city life
-Beautiful scenery and cliff side views
-Remote and Private
-The Wairua cottage worked well for the 2 of us since there's only 1 Bedroom with 1 Queen size bed
-The cottages are owned by a nice couple: John & Trude, who are 5th generation to the Bethell family land. They live in their own cottage next to the Wairua Apartment, but we had no problems with privacy.
-We used the Scandinavian Hot Tub and it was so relaxing! It was a Huge perk to also have gorgeous views out to the ocean, mountains, greenery etc.
-Washer is free to use; its located in the large bathroom (there's no dryer but there's some clothesline clips and a heater and towel warmer)
-About a 10 minute walk down to the Te Henga Walkway (hiking trail)
-We parked our car in right in front of our front door!
-We interacted with John mostly and he was so easy going and friendly. He let us borrow his adapter because we forgot to bring one to charge our cell phones, tablets, etc. He lent us a detailed map to find our way around town easily, and also provided us with recommendations for places to eat.
-Its a very quiet area and neighborhood
-3 nights was the perfect amount of time for us to unwind
-We got so lucky and were invited to join a dinner event with a family who occupied the other 2 cottages - they hired a pizza maker so we had a chance to eat custom pizzas made directly from the Bethells outdoor wood fire pizza oven! It was a fantastic, once in a lifetime experience.
-Must have a car to get around
-Its about a 1 hour drive from Auckland airport, through some narrow, windy roads
-The cottage was a bit difficult for us to navigate to; best to follow Trude's instructions closely
-Its about a 20-30 minute drive into town (we went to Henderson) for restaurants or grocery stores
-The bathroom toilet handle took us some time to figure out, but once we realized how to use the lever with the right amount of patience, it flushes quite well
-Unlike the website photos, I view the cottage as quaint, rustic, and aged.
-In the bedroom, they provided the following: 2 white bath robes, extra blankets, sarongs, about 10 wooden hangers, small TV with local channels on a rolling stand, a small collection of books on the bookshelf above it, hairdryer, a floor heater (which we did not need to use). To my surprise, the blankets on the bed kept me warm enough; I generally complain about being cold but I was pretty content.
-In the living room space, they provided the following: hats, stereo with speakers, small roll up picnic blanket, coffee table, telephone for local calls, magazines, maps and folder with some information about the cottage
-In the kitchen area, they provided the following: Fridge with freezer, small jug of milk, utensils, microwave, dishes/plates, knives, pots, pans, oven mitts, kettle, glassware, paper towels, Tea bags, dish soap, dish towels. We cooked a few times for breakfast and dinner and felt we had everything we needed
-Pantry: Wine bottles are available but charged extra if opened/consumed. Condiments like oil, pepper, tomato sauce (aka ketchup) for guests to use if needed
-In the bathroom/shared laundry space, they provided the following: plenty of towels, laundry detergent, extra toilet paper, travel size shampoo and conditioner, and a small soap bar to use throughout the time of our stay (keep in mind its not replaced daily like in hotels)
-Outside: BBQ was available but we did not use it, patio seating with 3 chairs and a table
-We opened our french doors on a warmer sunny day and it was great to enjoy the breeze in the living space
-Guests can play croquet on the lawn or table tennis in the common room
-There's a mosquito net above the bed but we did not have to use it; the cooler temperatures seemed to keep all the bugs away
-Sign the guestbook. Its great to read prior guests' feedback about their stays!
