“Unforgettable experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2012

We had a chance to visit Bambaragala Rajamaha Viharaya in our recent trip to Sri Lanka. It is a temple having a history that is going back to a couple of centuries BC. You should go and see it as it has many rock caves and stone inscriptions which we were unable to see as we were in a hurry to go back. Unfortunately parts of the Buddha statue shown on the picture here has been destroyed by ruthless treasure hunters quite recently.

“A real surprise!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2012

We were staying at the Victoria Golf Club, which is a fantastic place but in the middle of nowhere - we drove a couple of miles back towards Digana & Kandy looking for somewhere to eat, the 1st place was the Lion Dens (they also do budget accommodation)- the owner turned out to be very helpful and had spent half his life in Italy, they would cook a curry for us but it would take a couple of hours to prepare - it was suggested we might visit Bambaragala - off we set back towards the golf club and took a left turn down a narrow road/track, after a couple of miles we arrived a Bambaraglia at dusk.
The temple is on a hill and you walk through an arch and then up a lot of steps to a building, a caretaker appeared who took us up more steps until we arrived at the cave that housed the ancient temple. The temple was in very good condition and had been a temporary home for the Tooth. We went down the steps back to building and met one of the monks. The whole thing felt like a great experience.
We understand that you can continue to scramble up above the temple with great views of the Victoria Dam from the top (written information says a guide for this is recommended!). Oh, and later we had an excellent meal at the Lions Den for a bargain amount!
