“Totally amazing area to visit & great hosts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2014

I decided to visit the Somme Battlefields years ago and eventually got round to booking something. Our hosts Tim & Gill were very helpful and Tim is a mine of information about the area and especially the ANZACs and what happened in the Somme in general. The personal attention was second to none and food was excellent. It is a traditional French Farm House modernised with excellent en-suite facilities. It is not a 5 star Hotel but neither is it 5 star prices. It is comfortable & Tim & Gill make you feel realy at home.
For anyone wanting to explore what happened to our Grandfathers & Great Grandfathers generation here then you will not find a better base.
Highly Recomended.

We spent 4 nights with Gill & Tim over the Anzac period, including a 2 day Battlefields tour with Ken Lees, Tim's colleague. Not being WW1 aficionados did not prevent us from enjoying enormously the 2 day tour. Ken pitched the pace & information perfectly, & although at the end of it we were pretty 'saturated' & couldn't have really taken more in, the information provided on the private tour made the sites come to life in a very meaningful way. Gill & Tim are incredibly hospitable hosts who were very generous with their cellar as well as their time & knowledge! Breakfasts were cereals, croissants, baguette &/or toast with juices, coffee or tea. Dinners were fantastic, as at the end of a big day, the last thing we felt like doing was finding somewhere to eat. Gill offered us a variety of options in the morning before we left & it was ready after a glass of wine & a wind down in the evening. There seemed to be an endless choice of delicious desserts as well, but my strong tip is to have the apple tart - best I've ever tasted! Our bedroom was small & to be honest, the bed was not the most comfortable, but we were so tired it didn't matter. For the Anzac Day dawn service, Gill left out a thermos for coffee & some croissants to keep us going until we got back for breakfast. Freeman Farm doesn't pretend to be 5 star - it is a B & B, & you shouldn't go there if that is what you want, but the overall experience was wonderful.

It is difficult to review this venue without appearing to overstate. The welcome given by Tim and Gill was unsurpassed and the pair of them seemed instinctively and effortlessly able to pitch the balance between hosting and allowing guests their own space just right. The average user of Tim and Gills facilities will like as not have an interest in discovering more about the Battles of the Somme and this was the case with my father and I. The visit had much poignancy for us but it was the advice and guidance of how best to take in what we wanted that added to the trip an X factor that Money cant buy. Now, on the subject of money, set aside the fact that the accommodation is extremely reasonably priced, what was extremely telling was how Tim almost appeared uncomfortable accepting payment when it came to settling up. The feeling that you were the guests of friends was very real and in no way contrived. Gills hearty home cooking being delicious and plentiful, of course added to this. it is so rare to find people making a living doing what they love and these guys stand out as people who are doing just that.
my only moan about the stay was that I wish we could have stayed longer.

I have just returned from a Somme battlefield tour with two friends and spent two wonderful nights with Tim and Gill (And Derby). The only description I can suggest is wonderful! Accommodation is very comfortable. The location perfect and the evening meals were substantial and delicious. The breakfasts also need a mention as they were the perfect start to the day. Tim has an extensive knowledge of the battle and the artifacts in the farmhouse were very evocative. Did someone else mention beer and wine flowing? Wonderful hosts, wonderful location, wonderful food. I can't recommend Tim and Gill highly enough and am already planning a return visit. Thank you guys.

Just returned from a very special trip to Freeman Farm, it has been an absolute treat. Tim and Gill made us so very welcome, it felt like home from home. We opted for a one day tour, covering the key sights, but it's also the passion Tim has in imparting his extensive knowledge, telling the battle stories and the imagery he creates which made the tour come alive. The authentic Somme weather was much appreciated too!!
The location in Miraumont is ideal, the accommodation lovely, homely and relaxing. The food was delicious. I have to say, Gill is one great cook!! Extremely generous hosts, genuine, friendly, we couldn't have asked for more.
It is the best B&B we have stayed in, I couldn't recommend it highly enough. Thank you both, and young Sam, whenever we see a Moooostache we shall think of you!!

I have just visited Tim and Gills farm at Miraumont and had a 2 day battlefield tour. The accommodation is very good, extremely comfortable and clean. We had an evening meal each evening we stayed at the Farm and the food was lovely. as was the wine, beer and cider that flowed very generously. The breakfasts are continental and filling for the days tour. Tim conducts the tours and he tailors them for the visitor. He is extremely knowledgeable and quite clearly loves his chosen subject. This makes the tours of each battle site much more informed and interesting. the pace is as slow or fast as you like and we had 2 incredible days. I really cant recommend this farm or tour highly enough and will hopefully return in a couple of years for a tour of the Ypres area.

This review if for Tim Wright's battlefield tour - we had made other arrangements previously for accommodation and I can't comment on the farm.

If you have an interest in the battlefields of WW1, English and Australian military history or you are simply looking for an experience in Northern France, then this is the tour for you. Having studied battlefields around the world and travelled to Gallipoli, the Palestinian peninsula, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and PNG to visit the areas, I was looking for a more comprehensive tour, tailored for specific events and areas - this tour exceeded all my expectations. Tim's detailed knowledge of the specifics of the campaign, his genuine passion for research and his easy narrative style combined to make this an exceptional experience.

Tim takes you to the very heart of the battlefields, walking the ground and the old trench lines to give you an intimate understanding of the atrocious conditions, the mistakes and the key events. You are able to stand in old trench lines and on little known observation points and get a real understanding of the landscape and how it shaped the campaign.

I doubt there is a better experience than this anywhere in Northern France. If you are looking for a bespoke tour and seek to understand the battlefields with a guide with a comprehensive knowledge, then this is it. Stay off the busses, forget the tour brochures and book a tour with Tim - it will be an unforgettable experience.

Tim's narrative is easy to understand, tailored for the audience and makes for a warm and welcome experience. Don't miss it.
