“Very friendly local pub”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2012

We have twice stayed in Rogerstone on holiday and now eaten here 3 times over a 12 month period. On each occasion we had very good friendly service with the food plentiful and of reasonable quality. It is not very sophisticated or cosmopolitan - my London-bred kids found the curries very bland and the steak requested 'rare' was not at all bloody...but it is what you would expect in a village pub in South Wales. We had a really delicious steak and mushroom pie and it is all good value. We also found the manageress in particular extremely accommodating for our large party including ensuring we had all we needed for one of our party who is in a wheelchair. They are struggling to keep going in the current economic tmes so please keep supporting your local!

Didnt stay here but came here for a meal with my mum and boyfriend after my nan recommended it.

Arrived here just after opening time, couple of people were sat down at dinner tables, went to the bar and got told to give the waitress some more time and wait in the bar area (quite grotty). We waited about 15 minutes until we were seated at a dinner table despite the fact that most of them were ready when we got there. There was no apology for the wait.

The dining area was very dated. Also the tables were so close together in our section that both tables couldn't really have conversations without disturbing each other, or being obviously overheard.

The waitress seemed as if she didn't really want to be there, wasn't bubbly or friendly in the slightest, just there to take the orders.

The food although generously portioned was quite average.

I can only imagine the main reason my nan likes this place is because they give you big pieces of cod when you get a cod and chips. And to be fair because you end up with so much food it is good value for money.

As a local, I have never stayed I the rooms here, however if the rest is anything to go by I wouldn't bother. The place is dated, run down, coupled with poor food and worse service. For some inexplicable reason the older generations seem to love it, probably because you could describe the canteen style slop they serve as marginally better than the nursing home offerings! I have never met anyone of an age to be computer literate that has anything good to say about the place, so can only assume the good reviews have been written by the management. I don't think it will be long before the clientele are all dead, and they can do something constructive like build houses on the site! No one would miss the awful place!

This August we happened to come upon this hotel purely by accident. We entered this hotel and were very suprised by how clean and well decorated the pub was. We met with the Bartender and shown the rooms upstairs. The rooms were very spacious as far as rooms go in the UK. They were very clean and well decorated. The room had a spacious onsuite bathroom with shower. They have free internet, large fridge in the hall to for the guest's use. The breakfast in the morning which is included wasextremely good. The staff bent over backwards to make us as comfortable as possible. The owner, his wife, the bar staff and the chef did everything to make us feel at home. They offered us suggestions as to sites to see. We liked this place so much, we asked to stay for an additional 2 more nights. We had dinner in the pub twice during our stay and could not be more happy with the meals, only to say that you better have a healthy appetite as the portions are large. For those people coming from North America, it is traditional for patrons to order their drinks from the bar, This B&B was one of the best we have stayed in and the least expensive. Again the locals and the staff made our day. Hopefully, we will return to the UK and we will definitely travel to Wales and we will be staying at this hotel.

Many thanks to all the staff at The Rising Sun Hotel, we really enjoyed our stay, food fabulous, room excellent, location spot on. We were visiting the area to primarily see the Olypic football match between Team GB and South Korea, also spend a day at Cardiff Bay, we both had a wonderful weekend.

Many Thanks

sorry to say my experience at this pub was not good. Quite expensive for poor quality food that was prepared by someone who has no pride in his/her work. Bar staff and waitresses looked like they were not happy in their jobs.

We have been going here for years and has always been our local, it is still of very high standard and hasn't lost it's traditional feel to it like most pubs. Would always recommend if someone is looking for a good pub meal and Great Sunday lunches too! Nice relaxed atmosphere whether you're going to for a drink or a meal, nice outdoor area too. Not a bad word to say about the place, so would definitely recommend!
