We stayed at Pentre Tai Farm for a weekend in November 2008. The farm is situated just outside of Newport, and is about 15 miles from Cardiff.
The B&B has a number of rooms situated in a newly developed section of the house specifically built to house the B&B rooms. Although everything was clean, my girlfriend and I felt almost like we were staying at a hotel - the B&B has none of the usual 'homely' feeling associated with B&B's. We had sensed that the building work was not yet complete, as the skirting boards in our room had not been fixed to the walls yet, and were just placed loosely against the walls.
Our room was medium-sized and clean, and the large en-suite bathroom was very clean. The room had also the usual amenities, like a TV and hairdryer and coffee/tea making facilities. Although the bathroom was spacious, the shower cubicle was quite small, and it was somewhat unusual to find the chest of drawers and closet for our clothes in the bathroom, instead of the bedroom. The layout of the bathroom was also somewhat impractical - the shaving mirror is not situated above the sink, but on an adjoining wall, making shaving more work than it needs to be. The owners would be well advised to provide better bath towels as the smallish ones we were left served their purpose, but barely so. The water pressure in the shower was quite weak, and this was made worse by the fact that there was no hot water at all for my shower on the second morning. Other guests we spoke to also confirmed that they had to have cold showers on occasion.
The rooms have very thin partitioning walls - we could clearly hear the television in the room next to ours, and could also hear another couple talking in another adjoining room.
When we booked the accommodation, we were told that the owners were not going to be at the B&B during the weekend, but their son would run the B&B for the weekend. As we were still required to pay the full rate, we expected good service irrespective of who was managing the B&B. Unfortunately the son was inexperienced at preparing breakfast, and we had to wait for 40 minutes on the first morning for our cooked breakfast. On the second morning, my girlfriend informed him 20 minutes in advance of the time we wanted to have breakfast, and we still ended up waiting for 20 minutes at our table for the breakfast. We were also not impressed with the quantity or the quality of the breakfast, and left the breakfast table feeling hungry on both mornings after a very mediocre breakfast.
I would rate this B&B equal to a 2 star English hotel, and am disappointed that the rates charged far exceed the quality of the experience offered.
