We go to Newport at least once a month as we have family down there. We've stayed in quite a few different places over the years; From the Celtic Manor down to the Premier Inn, and everything in between. So I feel pretty well informed when I say that in value for money terms this is one of the best hotels I have stayed in.
We paid just £79 for one night in a lovely room (see their website for room pics, they are very accurate) for two people, including breakfast. I didnt have the breakfast so cant comment on that, but our relatives in the area tell me the food there is very good.
The hotel is about 2 miles away from the roundabout at the Coldra when you exit the M4 for Newport. Its really easy to find... one straight road for a mile and a half or so, a right turning and then half a mile later on the right there is a building that you cannot miss because it looks exactly like their photos on the website.
The bedroom was in a seperate block to the restaurant and bar area, but only two steps away, so not a problem. We were really worried when we checked in as there was a wedding that night in the restaurant, with a live band, and they were warming up when we were checking in. It was rather loud to say the least and, whilst I would have loved to be there for the party, we needed a full night's sleep that night. So i asked the girl on check-in to make sure we had a room away from the noise. She was very nice and really helpful but explained they were full and all rooms were already checked in except for ours. But she would come up to the room with us and make sure we couldnt hear the noise before we checked in and if not, she would sort it out. She came up, the room was beautiful and perfectly silent. We couldnt hear a thing from the band. As a result we slept very well that night.
The bedroom looked like something from a magazine and the bathroom was beautiful, in huge stone tiles and with a fantastic power shower. I wanted to take a picture to show the Hilton up the road what they should be doing. Last time we stayed at the Hilton (a month ago) we paid twenty quid more than we did for this room. It was not as nice, it was noisy and with a very tired and run down bathroom. Our friend came to Newport this weekend and he could only get in at the Hilton... he paid £104 for single occupancy of such a room, against the £79 we paid for the same night in the Old Barn Inn. And it is only 1.5 miles away between the two hotels.
I know for sure where I am booking next time we go.
The only other thing I want to say is how nice all the staff were. We had a drink in the bar before going to bed... The bar staff were lovely. When I checked out the young guy on reception was extremely efficient but really friendly with it. Its the kind of place I would want to say I owned if I was in the hotel business.
I saw the check out list when I walked up to reception. Everyone was paying the same price as us...
