I have been staying at The Upper House approximately once a month for nearly a year, now, and it never, ever fails to give me pleasure being there.
Apart from the lovely grounds and glorious views all around the hotel, the rooms are elegantly furnished in the country house style, the beds are comfortable with proper cotton sheets, and the well-equipped bathrooms offer fragrant shampoos and body lotions - and a little smiley rubber duck sits on the side of the bath!
There are plenty of teas and other refreshments available in each room; for example, there are glass bottles of both still and sparkling water, and biscuits for the midnight munchies. The rooms are always warm, comfortable and spotlessly clean, and have modern TVs. The lounge is full of stuffed, comfy sofas with a roaring log fire in the winter - so cosy. It's a very fine building.
The only room I found less comfortable was one of the smaller ones with patio-style doors opening out onto a little balcony - along with 2 other rooms! There were no other windows which meant that ventilation was a problem in winter, and I found myself wondering who my neighbours might be in the summer.... We could have had midnight parties on the balcony, though!
The food: an excellent breakfast, there was more than sufficient for my needs, and it was well cooked with an endless supply of good coffee and tea. Soup and sandwiches are readily available during the day, and all good. I've never lunched or dined, which is why I'm giving 4 stars, but I can't imagine the food would be a let-down.
Finally, the service is excellent and always so friendly. I would give it a 5 star rating on its own. I look forward to my visit each month, and hope to try the dining experience soon.
