Owner description: The Churnet Valley Railway, is a picturesque heritage Steam Railway that runs through the Staffordshire’s Little Switzerland, the Churnet Valley. It meanders alongside the Caldon Canal and the River Churnet for a delightful nostalgic ten and a half mile return journey. Kingsley & Froghall Station has ample parking and disabled access and is home to the award winning traditional Tea Room and the railways Souvenir Shop both of which are open on running days. Consall Station has no public road access making it very quiet and isolated in its situation beside the weir on River Churnet where the canal splits from the river. Nearby are the Lime Kilns and the Black Lion Public House. At Cheddleton Station you can visit the Railway’s Engine Sheds and its small Railway Artifacts Museum. Trains run Sundays Easter to September, Saturdays June, July & August and Wednesdays in July and August plus all Bank Holiday Mondays.

“Beware you may not get what you expect”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2012

Went to the 1940's weekend and stunned to find no steam engines just a couple of old diesel trains dating from 1960's . Railway apparently has had no steam trains for months but has tried very hard to not let anyone know. Website has a brief mention tucked away where its hard to find. Wont be going again.

“A fun train ride!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2012

This trip is very good value, as you can hop on and off the train at different stations and times of the day. You travel through some pretty countryside, where a canal runs alongside for part of the way. We got on at Cheddleton and went through to Froghall station, where you can get a cup of tea and yummy cakes! The whole railway is run by an army of wonderful volunteers!

“Friendly preserved railway”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2012

I took my grandson there for both the Thomas the Tank Engine event, and the steam gala weekend.

Their normal friendliness and helpfulness was a little curtailed at the Thomas weekend, due to H&S rules imposed by the Thomas "franchise", but it was back to normal for the steam gala, and my grandson was able to get on the footplate.

I'd definitely recommend going there on a Cauldon Lowe running weekend, as the length of the run is much better, and as others have said, you then get the two contrasting types of scenery - the lovely rural valley run between Froghall and Cheddleton, and then the Moorlands scenery between Leekbrook junction and Cauldon. Also, the sound of the steam loco working very hard to climb out of the valley onto the uplands is most impressive.

“A ride on an old mud cart”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2012

What is that plinky plonky music emanating from some rubbishy speakers at Cheddleton railway station all about!!!
Is it supposed to add to the nostalgic feel?
HARDLY.
Took advantage of a glorious Sunday afternoon to take a trip on a ............................DMU.
£11 is a lot steep and quite frankly I can't find anything good to say about the experience other than the fantastic countryside and the CVR isn't responsible for that.
Sorry, I just think it's very average
