“Shocking food. Shocking Service.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2013

Where to begin. The food was terrible at best. The service was met with a side of disgust and incompetence. the ambiance was terrible, and all in all a not worthy of the title "Best in Hanley"

Upon our arrival, after calling several times in advance to book, we were met by a very rude waiter who snorted in derision at our attempts as the restaurant was empty (clearly for this very reason). After arriving late, our starters were look warm at best, and given in my experience they should have been served piping hot. This was their first mistake. Their second was within the mains as not only were our "rare" steaks char-grilled to a crisp, the sides were stone cold and pasta not much better. The only part of the meal which we as a group found acceptable was the desert, which was probably as it seemed defrosted from the Tesco frozen aisle.

The staff clearly have no idea how to deal with customers, especially those foreign customers who don't have a great understanding of English. They were rude when serving, giving scathing glances in our direction every time assistance was needed, to the point where complaints were almost given. This type of rudeness should not be tolerated by paying guests, and i feel that the staff should indeed be taught how to serve in a respectful manner. This type of service i would expect in such establishments as KFC or McDonalds, but in what is supposedly voted the best in Hanley, i would expect more!

The establishment itself was basic, with what i can only describe as a concentration camp feel, or a post world war 2 Italy. The floors and tables were dirty. The less i mention about the bathrooms the better. The overall ambiance of the restaurant was poor at best, with those who actually wanted to have conversations having to sit around 2" away from each other. There was also an overpowering odor coming from the kitchens which genuinely made me worried about the food i was going to receive.

All in all my experience of Portifino's Hanley was a poor one, and next time i want a similar meal i think i'll just wait behind the bins of pizza hut on a friday night, as this would probably match up with Portafinos in both quality and quantity.

Poor Show.

“Not as good as it `s Website thinks it is.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2013

Perhaps I went to a different restaurant than other reviewers. If this is the best that Hanley can offer then Lord help Hanley.Starting with the four star hygiene rating for the kitchen displayed on the door.I didn`t think that people ever displayed them if less than five. The decor is very dated and the chairs most hard and uncomfortable. We dined from the £12.95 Pre Theatre menu which wasn`t too bad but didn`t use much in the way of costly ingredients. The starters were fine but the Fish based spaghetti was
a stranger to fresh fish.Coffee was good but we were quite put off the puddings by seeing the waiter putting them in a microwave just outside the kitchen door , especially as the menu made a great play of the home made factor.Looked like home made and flash frozen to me.
The restaurant served it`s purpose for a pre theatre meal but I would never go near it otherwise

“Excellent food and service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2013

We came out for a meal with my friends last night to celebrate my 30th birthday and had a fantastic evening. The food was superb and the waiter, who didn't mind us pointing out looked a lot like Ralph Little, was polite and funny.

Excellent service and great food made for an excellent evening on the whole. Many thanks to 'Ralph' for adding to the experience on the whole!

Will definitely go here again

“Lovely place to eat ”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2013

A group of 8 of us with a mixture of adults and children attended the restaurant midweek for a birthday celebration. On arrival we were greeted and shown to our seats. The place had a lovely atmosphere and a nice comfortable feel.
On looking at the menu the choice was extensive. We were not disappointed. The food was divine. No one had any problems at all, nothing but praise for the food.
In all a very pleasant evening and will definitely return.
