I stayed with Kyrt and RJ largely on the reviews I saw on this site. I was traveling alone and wanted a place where I could feel safe and where the hosts could also take me around the area as I did not have a car.
What can I even begin to say that could do justice to my experience?? First of all, I feel like I made lifelong friends with whom I shared and can continue to share deep conversations, a ton of laughs, great food, fabulous days driving around the area exploring the complicated history and simultaneous magic that is Cape Town. Kyrt is a walking encyclopedia of facts and details about South Africa - he is funny, kind, flexible, deeply commited to sharing his love of his country and it's people with the guests who quickly become like family. He knows everything about EVERYthing! There isn't a tree that he doesn't know the name of, where it came from, why it bends in the wind as it does...he knows all the gorgeous back roads and the history of who lived along them and when ..he knows the best time of day to visit specific places, is aware of the most unique shops, is deeply knowledgeable about the history of the people, the townships, the community development projects, the nuances of the latest political and social developments. He has a very expansive heart that is able to convey both the hardship and the hope of his complicated and wonderful country. He is like an ambassador for Cape Town but with heart and soul and a deep humanity which infused every trip we took, every place we saw, every story he shared.
The guest house itself is designed to make folks comfortable. It is really lovely (albeit cold in the winter!!! - bring extra layers during the rainy months). The rooms are decorated with care (and flair), the common spaces are comfortable and available for the exclusive use of guests (and the occasional visit by three wonderful dogs), the breakfasts are lovingly prepared by Zuki who is a delight in her own right... RJ, while the more introverted of this dynamic Kyrt/RJ duo, is funny and deeply knowledgeable, more of a behind-the-scenes architect of anyone's stay here, than Kryt who is really the face of one's everyday experience. Together they make magic.
I cannot say how much it meant to me to feel so well cared for and taken in by this amazing couple who have devoted their lives to making a trip to Cape Town a truly unique and exciting adventure. I really do feel like I have made friends for a lifetime in Kyrt and RJ. I love them both. It's funny to write a review of them and Sea-more --- kind of like writing a testimonial about one's family. I cannot imagine why anyone would want to stay anywhere else when Kyrt and RJ are there, ready to make possible any dream you have for your time in the area. Let them design some of your days - unless you know the country really well you could not come up with anything close to
the varied experiences these guys have in store for you.
As an aside, I discovered there is nothing about the guest house that Kyrt does not literally have a hand in. When I left, he was in the process of building a new room. Hopefully, it will be ready when you want to stay there... It promises to be spectacular!
I am in love, what can I say?
