“The hotel to stay at.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2012 via mobile

I visit this hotel fairly often and each time I go back I am amassed by the friendly staff, great rooms at a reasonable rate. The welcome is always so good and the staff really go out of their way to assist you, they a smile is the best way to light up someone's day and they do it each time without fail.

The view, the rooms, the cleanliness, the great restaurant coupled with the great staff just really makes this the hotel to stay at and to return to each time.

Stayed in a very spacious apartment (two bedrooms) with stunning views of Table Mountain. A big lounge area and patio made for a very relaxing stay. The hotel is also situated in close proximity to bustling restaurants and the beach area which made for a great day trip outdoors. Overall, we had a very enjoyable experience.

We stayed for 5 nights for a family wedding. The hotel was in a most enviable location: stunning views across the sea, not too far from the city but far enough to feel relaxed and peaceful, and useful shopping and leisure facilities close by. The on-site Blowfish restaurant was excellent: one evening we had a table right by the window looking out across to Table Mountain - the perfect spot to enjoy discovering more of the fine food & wine on the menu! The provision of kitchen facilities in the amazingly spacious room meant that a self-catered breakfast was a nice, relaxing option (some of our party did take breakfast in the restaurant but found it busy and the service rather slow). Another benefit was the availability of ample parking, with security staff on hand. We made use of the hotel laundry facility which did a great job and returned our clothes very quickly and at a reasonable rate compared with other hotels we have stayed in back in the UK.

Our room was a beachfront cabana, which meant the sea view was restricted by the dunes, but once we stepped out onto the terrace the beautiful vista across the bay to Table Mountain opened before us. When travelling out by car, it was always worth having a look across the nearby Rietvlei Wetland Reserve: there were fantastic displays of Flamingos along with many other wild birds that I could not begin to identify, and on one occasion we were treated to the sight of a couple of pelicans coming in gracefully to land.

Why not five stars? A few little niggles; (i) on arrival everything was ready but we found the towels looked less than fresh (I am sure they had been changed but had not been laundered particualrly well) (ii) one day we came back from a full day out to find a window had been left open, presumably by domestic staff, leading onto the terrace, which was a bit of a security risk, and (iii) I found the sound of what I assume was the ventilation unit on the roof to be somewhat intrusive at night.

But, all things considered, we had a truly marvellous time at the Dolphin Beach Hotel.

I had a group that i put into this hotel. They had confirmed 10 x twin rooms and 1 x single room. When group checked in they had put 4 per room. "Apparently" a previous group did not want to check out - so they inconvenienced my group that had already paid 100% upfront. They assured me before check in that it was was to be Twin rooms and then put 4 people togther - Their excuse was there was nothing they could do.!!! My client was furious and i will not use this hotel ever again for any groups. Be careful they make promises and they do not keep. Also the internet was not working.

The location of the hotel is very good not too far away from the main attractions but far enough from the hustle and bustle to ensure you have peace and quiet. It is also about a kilometre from a shopping centre offering various restaurants for your wining and dining most of these having a very good view of the sea. Very good service and the staff go out of ther way to assist. The pictures do not do the hotel justice especially if you get a sea facing room.

I found the Dolphin Beach Hotel to be very similar in nature to many of the condo rentals that you can get in Florida. A building goes up on the beach in the 80s, they sell units to several people as vacation condos, those people furnish them with relatively cheap furniture and then don't touch it for twenty-five years. Some of those rooms are then rented out as hotel rooms.

The positive side of that arrangement is that this is more than just a hotel, it has a feel of a vacation apartment with more permanent facilities like a playground, gardens, etc. The room also has a full kitchen, so you could choose to just prepare and eat your meals at the hotel and have a relatively cheap vacation.

The negative side is that while kept clean, the whole setup certainly does show its age. It is kept in decent condition, similar to how you might keep your own vacation condo if value is your main concern, but it certainly doesn't feel like a hotel from an upkeep perspective.

I was looking for a good value, on the beach, a feeling of safety, with free parking and the ability to drive around Cape Town on my own. I certainly got all that at The Dolphin Beach Hotel and if that's what you're looking for then I'm sure you will too.

However, if you're looking for a traditional hotel experience this one isn't for you.

Some specifics:
- The room is large, with lots of space to unpack for awhile
- The bed was adequate, but certainly feeling old
- I ate lunch at the onsite restaurant and it was both good food and good value
- The gardens outside are quite nice, with a path leading directly to the white sand beach
- All of the staff I interacted with were very friendly, from the parking security guard to the front desk (who helped me with planning some sightseeing)

I was able to get a multi-night discount by booking through expedia.
