“Beautiful hotel with great views of the valley”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2013

We loved this place. The room was perhaps the nicest one of the 6 in which we stayed during our visit to Bhutan, and the view of the valley was definitely the best hotel room view we had during the trip. And the wood-burning stove, which one of the staff lit for us, made it all very charming. Even the power outages added to the charm.
We definitely took good memories from here.

Very peaceful place to stay for a night with much cooling weather compared to others.

Guestroom:
- spacious room size.
- heater (back to basic) firewood.
- bottle water provided.
- bed very comfortable.

Restaurant:
- mainly is vegetarian (fresh from the farm) especially potatoes.
- buffet service (breakfast and dinner).

The rooms were spacious with magnificent view of the valley, well equipped for the cold evenings with wooden stoves and hot water bottles. The shower with hot water didn’t disappoint either.
The food was rather average though.

I've stayed here twice and it's absolutely my favorite destination in Bhutan. Not only is the valley one of the most beautiful places on earth, but the hotel is delightful in a rather funky way.

First, it's cold here. The front desk doubles as the bar. Guest rooms are heated by small wood stoves. For the uninitiated, this can be daunting. However, the best approach is to throw in a few logs before going to bed. Then enjoy the hot water bottle that is slipped under the covers as part of the nightly turn down. The fire eventually burns out over night, but can be started in the morning (the trick is to use a lot of the powdered fire starter) and the room heats up remarkably quickly.

The decor is a step up from the usual in Bhutan, which is a special surprise in this remote valley. Food is better than average, but isn't a highlight. The bar, however, offers a local specialty: the "dragon warmer" (local rum, apple cider, and honey). Two of those and you don't need the nightly hot water bottle. All in all, a delightful experience.

Room Tip: Best room in the house is room #8 (upper level corner room). It's larger than the others and off...

It may just be that we were unlucky. There was no power in the entire area when we were there and there was still no power when we left. This may have an impact on our views.

This place is more like a mountain lodge, within 10 minutes drive from the black-necked cranes viewing/visitor's centre. It is very quiet and cosy. As there was no power, the place was very very cold but the staff was very helpful in arranging for the heating. They will light up the wood-fired stove in the room for you, they will also light up the wood-fired stove in the dining area. Endless cups of hot tea are served. The only remedy was to just go for the "red panda" to keep you warm.

The room is very spacious and overlooks the entire valley. At sunrise, the entire area was covered in ice and frost, it was beautiful.

The dinner is fairly simple with the usual Bhutanese "tourist" food being served - rice, stir-fried vegetables, stir-fried tough/chewy meat, chilli cheese and fruits. The breakfast was also fairly simple but it was fulfilling.

No comment on the shower as it was not available.

This 'hotel' reminded us of an African safari lodge, although a spacious Swiss chalet could describe it as well. Everything was positive: the warm welcome (a hot towel to wipe your face the moment you step out of the car was great as we felt really cold); the spacious room with view on the valley and excellent amenities; the stove in the room which can be filled with more wood which is lying ready; the hot water bottles; the dining room with a fire in the middle where the guests can warm themselves and get to know each other; the good food (although only buffet was available); the welcome tea or coffee; the friendly staff; the surroundings. We asked for a room with view on the valley but the view was a bit hampered by the trees in front. However, there was still enough to see and I think all rooms have a great view.

Even though we stayed at the fanciest hotel chain in Bhutan, the Amankora, this small hotel was the highlight of our trip for me. Real, human, beautiful, true to its nature and the nicest people among a friendly and down-to-earth country,

Room Tip: Any room is as good as any other
