“Great location and landscaping - rooms & hospitality could be improved”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2013

My friend and I stayed here for a couple of nights in early February '13. The location was great as it was just a few meters away from the beach. The staff took great care of the grounds and landscaping. Food was very good too. The downfall is that the rooms were extremely simple and somewhat dirty. They lacked a "fresh" feeling after a day of touring the busy streets of Trincomalee or hitting the beach. Also, there is no TV in the room which made our rain-out day very boring and lengthly.

This hotel could also use a refresher in hospitality as most staff seemed put off of simple requests or even taking a meal order. This and a nicer room would push this review to a four star rating.

P.S. the gray lampur monkeys playong on top of the roof of our hotel room was really cool!

Four of us had a wonderful experience at Nilaveli Beach Hotel and the hospitality rendered by its staff - from reception to the restaurant. I had informed their booking office of the requirement of vegetarian diet and we were in for a pleasant surprise in the manner in which this message had percolated down to the staff of the hotel. The hotel itself is a wonderful property opp. the Pigeon Island and on the beautiful Nilaveli beach. Considering that this is a Tsunami and civil war battered area it is highly commendable that the spirit of hospitality is of very high order. We are sure that we will once again visit this resort sometime in the near future!

The title says it all!! Sure this isn't a 5 star hotel, but where it lacked in stars it more than made up with the staff service, food & beach. Staff & chefs were more than accommodating right down to us requesting chilli crab which was not on the menu but made specially the very next day!! We occupied their deluxe rooms that pretty much opened onto the beach. If you can get these rooms - it is well worth it. We tried to extend our stay but unfortunately it was booked. Hoping to go again very soon however the travel from Colombo to Nilaveli is the most daunting.

Room Tip: Request the rooms that have access to the beach - I think these are their deluxe rooms. Order chilli...

This is a beautiful, tastefully decorated hotel spread out over several acres of trees. The food was good, the staff friendly and helpful. We got a deluxe room which had a hammock just outside.

Unfortunately, the sea was too rough for bathing and there were some bouts of bad weather but all in all, it was a delightful and relaxing experience.

Frankly, we were rather wondeing if we'd made the wrong choice - between its competitor Chaaya Blu and this, much older hotel which had experienced many vagaries of fortune during the period of civil war. But all our doubts vanished when we visited the former - its silver pillars, white plastic chairs, blue'white decor and overall 'nouveau riche' atmosphere rather threw us... and the food was not great there either.... It was with a sense of relief that we returned to good ole Nilaveli, with its teak furniture and tasteful interiors.

Room Tip: Ask for deluxe rooms on the ground floor - they are significantly better and the price difference is...

The setting out of the hotel and the facilities were excellent, we had variety of food, have never tasted for many years being non-resident. The two standard rooms we occupied were average but nothing to make a big complaint

Room Tip: Mustn't choose standard rooms

We came to Trincomalee after 30 years of ethnic war and thanks for the authorities who made a chance to see our beautiful Sri Lankan eastern beach.
Hotel rooms are standard and food is wonderful.Still the season not started because of ruff sea but some local and foreign guests were there.
We found wonderful choice of food in buffet breakfast and dinner and friendly staff.

Room Tip: Better to select a room with verandah at beach side.

Overall we have an awful time at the hotel.
The toilets were really bad, they have not been cleaned very well. There was an awful smell that my 7 year old daughter vomited twice. I complained but nothing happened, it fell on deaf ears………..water pressure was really bad in the shower.
the air conditioning (which looked about 20yrs old) was making a lot of noises so we informed the hotel. They came had a look and said “it is just the way it is”.
After making a big issue they finally changed the room.
The towels had holes in them. When I complained about this new towel arrived. WHY COULD YOU NOT SUPPLY TOWELS WITH NO HOLES in the first place…IT IS BASIC AFTER ALL
It was just terrible!!!!!!!
I have to admit that the food was very very good……but the accommodation was so appalling it outweighs the amazing efforts made by the restaurant staff
