“Lovely country pub hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2013

Stayed one night during the week so we had the £79 deal, good value, not sure if I would pay £125 the weekend price. We did question whether to stay here because some of the reviews on trip advisor were poor, however we wanted a nice county pub in this area and so took the chance. Very pleased we did. Our room was lovely, bed very comfortable, bathroom small but clean. As previous reviews have said the gardens are lovely but very unkept. Breakfast was good when it arrived, very very slow.

Such a shame, when we walked in it looked great. Huge dining tables in the pub, cartoons on the walls, really lovely decor and friendly staff. We turned up on a Saturday afternoon and it was almost empty though. That should have given it away.

It's good, but not £125 a night good.

The rooms are tiny. Proper small. Bathrooms are fab with two showers mind, although our sink was blocked. Bose speakers and a telly and usual bits and pieces but boy was the room small.

Breakfast. Well it's not a big place, 8 rooms. So no need for us to wait nearly an hour for food. And for them to get my order wrong. It was very nice mind, and I wouldn't mind eating lunch or dinner there, but wouldn't stay again, not unless it was much better value.

I have just had a great two night stay at the Pear Tree Inn which I cannot fault. A beautiful room which was clean and fully equipped, including with a decent shower. There were some lovely touches in the room, such as the toiletries and towelling robe. I had two wonderful meals in the restaurant, the food was delicious and the service exceptional. Breakfast was again delicious and the staff could not have been more polite, professional or helpful. All in all my experience was excellent and I would thoroughly recommend both the restaurant and the accomodation - everything had a touch of class.

The Pear Tree Inn well situated for sightseeing in Avebury and Bath. However, the village of Whitley is nothing special.

Our room was spacious and although it was above the bar, the noise was minimal. The bed was comfortable and the furnishings modern. The bath robe was a nice surprise as was the powerful hairdryer. Tea, coffee and water (no biscuits) were in the room. I assume earlier guests may have been light fingered as there were only 3 coat hangers!

The bathroom was small and the bath very high - not good if you have mobility issues or short legs! Good section of toiletries.

The main drawback were the windows which only opened a few inches (and then had to be wedged open) which meant the room was hot.

The dining rooms are spacious with large tables. The 2 course set menu was good value but a la carte fairly expensive for a country inn. The food was good and plentiful although bread is extra even with the a la carte menu. The main drawback was the very long wait for the food. The first evening we waited 30 minutes for our cold starters to arrive and the next evening 45 minutes for the main course.

Breakfast was a little quicker (not helped by them getting the order wrong - why don't they write it down?). The menu is confusing - full English breakfast is included but if you just want a poached egg on toast followed by yoghurt, the yogurt is extra (although the menu doesn't mention this). No idea whether cereal was extra or included.

The restaurant service was a bit rough round the edges and menu confusing.

With Marco Pierre White's name attached to it, you expect something special. Its a good country inn but not outstanding.

I stayed here for three nights in December 2012. The hotel is very small, and cosy. Because it was Winter, and rained non-stop for 3 days and nights, we didn't get a chance to enjoy the small, but pretty gardens. However what we did get to do was enjoy the incredible food. On the first night we had a special steak deal in the restaurant, which lived up to our expectations. On the second night we ate out in Bath, and on our third night we thought we'd try the hotel restaurant again. And I ended up having one of the best meals I've ever eaten. Just fanstastic. Delicious isn't the word. Marco Pierre White has certainly trained his chefs well. The food was to die for and made the whole hotel experience that extra bit special.

This is a pub so don't expect anything else. The food was well presented and delicious. We really enjoyed dinner. The dining room was far from full on a Bank Holiday Friday so the atmosphere was not exactly buzzing. Previous comments about the breakfast did not reflect our experience. It wasn't a huge buffet but there was plenty of choice and it was fresh with good ingredients well cooked. The television in the room did not work at all despite reviews highlighting this for many months. That didn't detract from our stay in any meaningful way but really how hard is it to resolve this? The room was charming but a bit tired around the edges. Has the garden purposefully been left to overgrow? In some ways that highlighted the enormous and fruit laden pear tree. Maybe this pub needs more love in its general appearance and room maintenance but give it a try certainly for a meal.

Me and my wife have been here on numerous occasions and always everything was excellent. On our last visit the service was disappointing. They took ages to take our order in the bar and after waiting a long time to be taken through we have decided to go in the Restaurant unaccompanied. Towards the end of our main course we could visibly realised that the staff slowly started to disappear. Occasionally one member of staff was popping in for dessert order or to clear something from our table. When we finished and asked for our bill at the bar we realised that 3 of them were chatting behind the bar!!! To busy to concentrate on the guests. After we paid and left, on our way home we looked at the bill and the drinks that we had in the lounge prior to dinner were missing from the bill together with the bread that we have been advised that is chargeable!!. Not sure what money they are making??!!
If you like the food but you are not bothered about the service, this is a good place!!
