“Mixed Reviews - Two Different Places”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2012

*** Please note that Camping Ground and Cabins are two separate areas and seem to be run as such: there are two receptions, stores and staff - their shared website and the reviews here seems to be the only connection. ***

I stayed at the CAMP GROUND for a few days with my girlfriend in January. As you'd expect for that time of year it was very quiet but unseasonably warm. It's a small place in a picturesque setting with incredibly friendly and helpful staff. The stories about raccoons are true though - don't leave bags of rubbish out overnight!

The camping area is right on the river with half the plots (sites) actually on the riverbank and
there's a stony 'beach' that would be great for kids to play on. The store is tiny and a little pricey as you might expect, but very well stocked. Firewood collection is not allowed so bring your own or buy it when you get there. There are alternative places to shop and a gas station less than a mile away.

In summary, I loved this place. It's a great spot to use as a base while discovering Big Sur, and we'll be back.

Extremely friendly and helpful staff. Small but cozy camping spots with picnic table and firepit. Clean showers/restrooms make camping more manageable. AND pet friendly! Will definitely be back!

Stayed in a cabin. It was wonderful. In the redwoods and very clean, we loved the fact that we could have a fire at night.

Room Tip: Cabin 70 is great. No kitchen but 2 beds and large.

We arrived here late in the afternoon without a booking and were greeted by a really sweet woman who gave us a discount price for a cabin. Our cabin was very clean with a rustic feel. The area is really beautiful and you can walk along the river and catch some sun. A 5 minute walk away is the excellent River Inn Restaurant. I had the most amazing ribs there! There is a small shop on site at Riverside so you can grab some supplies there. The only downside of the cabin was the lack of soundproofing. We were knackered so went to bed pretty early but neighbours on both sides came back after midnight and woke us up. The walls are pretty thin if you're in a non-detached cabin. But I'm not complaining as such because there's not a lot the owners can do about that in a wooden cabin. We only stayed here one night and it suited our needs just fine. But I would try to get a detached cabin in the future.

This was our first time camping at a private campground. We had a real good time and experience here. we were in space 29, and 25 or 27, nestled in amongs the great redwoods. the camp space we were in was more on the roomier side, than some of the other sites. We met some nice people in the near by sites. We cook for an army.. so we shared our foodie with our nieghbors everyday, that was fun. The river is nearby so at nite we can hear it during 'quiet time'. They kept the showers and RR very clean... I would say they checked them every 2 hrs.and cleaned them 4 times aday. The staff is hospitable and helpful. They also rent innertubes to take you down the river, the water was kind of shallow, but it did the job. they have a small store on site, laundry room, games to borrow, and softserve ice cream! it is somewhat cramped or maybe compact but all in all it was nice stay. oh and legend has it that the racoons come out at nite so make sure to put all your food away!

Room Tip: if you can, take a drive to pick out your favorite spot..

Poor management, uncaring, money hungry owner puts people in tiny camp prison style accommodations too close for comfort with neighbors. Take heed, go next door for appreciation of this Redwood paradise: don't ruin it with this
haphazard camp/cabin (more like apts, not cabins). Remember, this is not a place to ask owner/workers for help. Go in risk--go to the other places not theirs for comfort, security & safety!!!

We stayed in a new cabin. We had a fire pit which was really great. We liked that it was quiet especially for a camp ground. If you don't let them know they will remove your unused wood from the pit if you are staying more than one night.
