My husband and I stayed at Treebones for one night while in Big Sur and had a great time. The yurts are perched up on a hill with great views of the ocean. The staff was very helpful and kind. Dinner was delicious and we stuck around the lodge afterwards to play chess.
The yurts are cool, the pool and hot tub amenites were nice as well. I'm not a fan of communal bathrooms/showers, but it was fine.

I just loved Treebones, a one night overnight stay while on a 2 day excursion from San Francisco to Hearst Castle with my 2 teens and nephew (ages 18, 14, 9). We were exhausted when we arrived at 6:30 after touring the castle but it was a gorgeous and fun drive off the Pacific Highway just south of Big Sur. We smiled when we saw the yurts and loved them immediately. The view is spectacular. We had yurt 3 which is not even one of the nicest and it was perfect, very cute and almost adirondack looking. It overlooked the mountains and we could see deer across the way with our binoculars. The lodge is lovely, again I would compare it to an Adirondack style with comfy places to sit, a fireplace with a fire going at night. The kids played scrabble and ate Ben and Jerry's ice-cream in front of the fire. I met lots of nice people who all LOVED this place! Very peaceful, delicious evening dinner with 3 options to choose from (cooked on the grill) and fun and yummy waffle breakfast. The kids loved this place as much as I did. I only wished my hubbie was with me on this get-away...so I will be back some day! We were out visiting relatives in SanFran and I decided it would be a fun excursion.
There is lots to see and do in the area of Treebones and I also recommend Hearst Castle even though it is a tourist trap is really is something special to see and learn about.

Take lots of pictures if you go to Treebones. I would post mine but they are similar to others I see posted, including the spectacular sunset. Simple pool and hot tub overlooking the ocean though we didn't get a chance to use these. Also loved the little gift shop where the kids got great TreeBones T-shirts to "show-off" their "yurt experience" to their friends back home in NH.

Hope you like it as much as we did! The perfect weather certainly helped. I almost forgot to mention, the bathrooms are fine; the regular bathroom in the lodge is beautiful! The others with the showers are fine and serve their purpose. I am NO camper and had no problem with these. Of course there is a nice sink right in the Yurt which makes it much easier. I did not see any negatives whatsoever and as someone else mentioned on a post, it is really amazing this was someone's dream and it took 20 years to get it off the ground. What a nice job they did!

We stayed there June 1st and 2nd. It sounded really nice and could have been except for a few major problems. First of all, the Yurt we stayed in did not have a fire place as was advertised. It had a space heater that did not come close to being enough heat. Secondly our yurt neighbors were extremely loud all night. The owner assured us the problem would be taken care of, but the second night was even worse. I felt lied to, and that I was not taken seriously. Oh well, live and learn. It would be much better to stay at a campground in the area, because that is all tree bones is, an expensive campground. Beware.

There's a place where the Land meets the sea,
Couples come for the splender, and the share,
to stay in a yurt, and to set one's soul free,
Enjoy a dinner for two with twenty,
Make love in a yurt stairing at the stars,
awake to the sounds of bird song and seal bark,
only to begin the day with the sight of a whale spout,
Stress fell from me like dead weight,
and the smell of malted waffles filled the air,
as my soul filled with life energy and again I felt:
"Kickback"
California's Big Sir man, That's your refueling stop!

My husband and I recently stayed at Treebones and, overall, we were pleased with the accommodations. The lodgings, 16 yurts, which are semi-permanent tents with lots of creature comforts like pine floors, sink with hot and cold water, gas stove, comfy queen bed, electricity, are very unique and perfectly suited to the land they're on. They are truly "perched" along the water's edge.

Complementing the yurts, is a beautiful centrally located lodge with lots of space for sitting, complimentary games and books to borrow, a pool, a hot tub and a redwood bar overlooking the ocean. It's truly an idyllic spot and a wonderful place to relax. The owners and front desk staff were friendly and helpful. Also, because restaurant choices in the area are limited, we ate at Treebones both nights we were there (breakfast is complimentary and dinner is extra). The food was reasonably priced (for the area) and surprisingly delicious and satisfying. Service was quick and friendly. There's also a small store in the lodge where gifts and various sundries are sold. The prices aren't cheap, but not wildly expensive either.

For the pros of Treebones -- great location in a breathtaking spot, helpful and knowledgeable owners and staff, very unique and relaxing locale, lower priced lodgings in what is a very expensive area, very peaceful.

For the cons of Treebones -- no private baths, potential for noisiness since the yurts are glorified tents with very little insulation, parking setup is a bit weird (it's removed from the yurts and your luggage is moved via golf cart), very dark at night (they do provide flashlights), yurts are chilly at night and very warm during the day.

Overall we really enjoyed our stay, but I'm not 100% sure I'd return. I thought the prices were very high for what you actually got, though much cheaper than other area lodgings. I think if I were to return, I'd just rent a campsite rather than a yurt. It's much cheaper and you still have use of Treebones' facilities. While the shared bath was conveniently located, the women's showers were really awful in my opinion. They were cramped, dark and the dividers between the showers weren't completely opaque, so you could somewhat see your neighbor in the dressing area, which I thought was weird and I didn't really like. So much care went into the design of every other aspect of Treebones, I'm not really sure why they fell so short in the design of the showers.

We stayed in Yurt 7 which was panned in some other reviews, but we loved it. It's definitely ocean view, very large and it was quiet for us. I've included a photo of the view with this review.
