“Exceptional, a real treat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2014

Can not fault service nor food. We took the wine suggestion also and was fantastic.
Location is incredible with an uninterrupted outlook across the Pacific. Not easy to find but for good reason and be sure to book. I hope to be lucky enough to visit again!

“Pretty Much The Best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2014

The Sierra Mar restaurant at Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur, California is pretty much the best restaurant I have eaten at in a very long time. Sierra Mar is located of the ocean side of Highway One overlooking the Pacific Ocean. You must make reservations or they won't let you have access to the Post Ranch. Forget Open Table call directly at 831-667-2800, and plan on the best view of the ocean, an excellent meal, great drinks, and a wonderful wait staff. The only hard part is the small climb up the stairway, or you can wait for a car.

We arrived on time for our reservation and were promptly seated with a exquisite view of the Pacific ocean and the California coastline. The restaurant is located about 700 feet above the ocean. We had drinks and enjoyed the architecture of the restaurant and the stunning views. The menu was Lunch Prix Fixe for $50.00 each for three courses. Each of the courses was excellent, and all of us were very pleased with the offerings.

This was probably the best meal we had on the Pacific Coast on our way to San Francisco. Enjoy, but do not miss it.

“Fabulous food in fabulous setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2014

As the evening sky crawls over Sierra Mar, it is just magical, pinks, purples and inky blues suffuse over the glass fronted restaurant.
The food is really good too, american modern cuisine with organic fresh ingredients, yummy!

“Best meal we had in California”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2014

We had lunch at Sierra Mar during our trip in California. We were staying at Treebones and decided to try Sierra Mar after a friend recommended it! And he was right - we LOVED it!! It was by far the best meal we had in California!! The staff was excellent, our waitress was extremely knowledgeable (she recommended us a really good wine) and attentive, the food was tasty and the views stunning. What else can you ask for? If you are in Big Sur we totally recommend this place - it is a bit expensive as everything else in Big Sur but it is totally worth it.

“OMG - What happened to this once fine restaurant????? Terrible!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2014

I had one of the very best meals of my life here back in October of 2013. We were so excited when we were back in Big Sur and could not wait to make our reservation. We should have listened to the staff at Ventana Inn. They all warned us that the place had changed, the management and chef had changed, and all the customers that they drive over there complain on their way back.

To begin with - we made a reservation on Open Table for 8pm. We arrived and the rude hostess asked us, "How did you make this reservation? Are you staying here because we usually don't allow outside guests". 1) How rude can you be? 2) We've dined there before and were not guests. 3) We made the reservation on Open Table. She then indicated that they had accidentally 'opened' the open table app and it was a mistake but if we didn't mind waiting 30 minutes or so - they would try and find us a table. Meanwhile we asked to speak to the manager and another rude lady came over and again asked us how we made the reservation. We went on Open Table and showed her again that reservations were still available. She huffed and walked away. We finally got seated and thus began our horrific 2 and a half hour dining experience. The service was completely absent and slow. No descriptions were given of the tasting menus. Drinks were not refilled. The worst part - the food was atrocious. Overcooked, tasteless, tiny portions, etc. The dessert was even just ok. We could not wait to leave. Getting the waiter to get our check was a process in itself.

On our return drive back to the Ventana Inn, the shuttle driver told us everyone he spoke to for the past few months was complaining about Sierra Mar's rude service and poor food. Overall it was simply terrible and disappointing.

I would highly suggest avoiding this place. There are much better dining options in Big Sur. It is sad that management has allowed this gem to turn into a nightmare. Don't waste your time or money.
