We went to the Whale Watcher Cafe in March of 2006. It was the best time to go because the whales were migrating south.
We had dinner there and the service was very intimate and friendly. The staff live at the hotel and the place is kind of like Cheers where everyone knows eachother and hangs out there. Our server was friendly and talked with us while our food was being prepared.
If you are not used to small town service it might seem creepy to you.
We recomend the Calamari. It was the Best Calamri Ever!
If you drive by this place you have to stop by.
We have been there twice and plan on going again.

The hotel was nice and cozy also. If you are looking for a place to party this isn't the place. Its a more romantic setting. No Tv or phone in the rooms

We really liked Gorda Springs. It is not a luxury resort, but if you enjoy old buildings and feeling like you're getting away to your family's vacation cottage from the 30s, then you'll have fun here. We were in the Rock House with our other friends, and were provided with great firewood and had a nice evening playing cards. There is no central heating but they provided quality space heaters for each room and we were toasty. The sheets and towels were clean and soft and felt like you were visiting your friend's house rather than a boring hotel. Dinner was good at the restaurant, overpriced but not compared to anywhere else in Big Sur! Our waiter was friendly and handled all the tables well, and the desserts were fantastic. We are recommending Gorda Springs to our friends who appreciate some unique charm and the beauty of old buildings. The proprietors were also exceedingly nice. Think of it as entering their world of a quieter, more rural life than expecting your world (the comforts money brings in the city?) to be superimposed on theirs.

Just got back from, what I would consider, a very over-priced weekend. Charged us $400 for one night at the Rock House, older sagging furniture and not enough to accommodate the four guests that it is supposed to house. Spider webs and spiders along the ceilings in virtually every room, the kitchen faucet didn't work, the entire cottage had a musty smell as did the towels and linens. This, at best, was a $200 a night facility. The dinner was nothing to write home about-4 meals (3 fish and chips and 1 calamari, one appetizer, waters, tea and coffee-no liqour and the bill was $110 !!. The vegetables and chips (potatoes) were stone cold and a knife to cut the calamari was a must. It was too tough to cut with a fork. I've had better seafood at Long John Silvers. If you're looking for a quaint, romantic, get-away, reasonably priced, this is NOT the place. For future reference, it is worthy of your avoidance at all cost. We will definitely not go back again. My wife says to say that the grounds were tacky with their farm animals in the middle of the cottages. The arbor near our cottage needed paint and repairs (still had Christmas lights on it) and a cheap folding plastic picnic table graced our sight. Situated directly above Highway 1, you could almost spit over the edge of the porch and hit someone's car, hopefully the top is up. Overall, the facilities did not live up to their internet hype. Enough said, now to get it out of my memory.

This establishment charges more than most luxury hotels and has not been renovated since the 60's, or it looks like it. My husband and I stayed in the Rock House and it was dirty, ugly, and smelled bad. No microwave, no phone, no television, no cell phone signal and it was more than $300 a night!! Do not bother with this place; it's a complete joke and a rip-off! For the money they get per night for these places they should tear them all down and start from scratch.

We stopped for lunch at the Whale Watcher Cafe and althougth the food was
excellent, the service was less than desirable. All five in our party agree that
the staff were rude and VERY strange. We couldn't wait to leave, it was a bit
creepy.
