“Very good!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2008

Our only regret about our stay at Glen Oaks was that it was for only one night. We would have loved to stay for a few more nights, as both the motel and of course Big Sur itself is a truly great place.

Glen Oaks is one of those small gems one comes across and we give it our warmest recommendations. Glen Oaks offers the best "simple" accomodation we have experienced so far. It is a clean, comfortable and cool motel which offers a great place to stay while in Big Sur. The pictures on their website do not do the rooms justice.

The motel does not serve food, so we dined at the Big Sur Roadhouse across the street (very good) and the breakfast place next door (also very good).

The staff at the front desk was helpful and knowledgeable and provided us with maps and suggestions for hikes.

At $200 per night, it is not cheap, but it is worth every cent.

The Glen Oaks Motel has the word "motel" in the name, but try not to let that freak you out. It's more like a cool boutique hotel with drive-up convenience.

The Queen trooms are decent sized and well laid-out with a mix of modern style and earthy, traditional elements. Lots of warm wood and bamboo. A gas fireplace serves the room's heater and there's a radiant heat stone bathroom floor that makes those midnight trips to the loo kinda cozy.

Big walk-in shower with that all-important good water pressure, loads of towels, big windows that open up to the breezy Big Sur weather.

Each morning I trotted down to the lobby and grabbed a free cup of coffee to start my day. They also have a collection of menus for every restaurant in the area. (P.S. The Big Sur Bakery is phenomenal.)

Free Wi-Fi in the rooms is all the tech you get. No TV. No phones. And there is zero cell signal here. HUGE plus if you're looking for a get-away, but bad news if you're Type A. (Then again, I don't imagine Big Sur attracts too many Type A visitors, just as a general rule.)

Quiet and peaceful; the PCH traffic barely rates a mention - even though the motel is just above it.

All in all, romantic and a lot of luxury for a good price.

  • Liked — Upscale room in a beautiful setting, at a really good price.
  • Disliked — The check-in area could use a facelift to match the style of the rooms.

We stayed at Glen Oaks for one night in April. We knew in advance that the hotel didn’t have TV’s and were thinking it would be pretty basic (it has no facilities) – it truly exceeded all expectations. The motel is on Highway One – although we didn’t find the traffic noisy at all.
The room was decorated in a modern style and had a fantastic fire place. The bathroom was of a good size with a heated floor – no bath, but the shower was huge! The room has a fridge which is behind a curtained off area – which also houses a single rail for hanging up clothes. To be fair there isn’t much storage space (we were only there for one night so didn’t need more).
The rooms have yoga mats – although admittedly we didn’t use ours, I loved the romantic feel that the motel offered.
We stayed in a room which had a front balcony and was basically a sun trap.
The motel has a little store on site, as well as a café (which is only open for breakfast and lunch); it looked nice, although we didn’t go in. In the reception area there is a computer which you can use (although free wireless connection is available in each room), as well as books and games. I ended up swapping 6 of my books for 2 from their mini-library. A good deal for the motel I thought but the lady at the front desk seemed to think I was committing a crime! The reception also has free coffee.
Across the road is a Mexican – and it was amazing. Fantastic flavours and very reasonable. We are huge fans of Mexican and to be honest this was just as good as those we have frequented in Manhattan.
For anyone going to Big Sur, I would suggest staying here!

We were really looking forward to a quick little trip to Big Sur from Pebble Beach this past weekend but were so disappointed with the exorbitant rates at Ventana & Post Ranch that we almost didn't do it. We come to the Monterey Peninsula every year for a conference and always head to Big Sur for an incredible lunch at NEPENTHE (where I've been going since I was 8 years old). We just wanted to spend a night down there so we could enjoy a dinner and then lunch the next day at Nepenthe without having to travel back to Pebble Beach.

Since we were going to be there less than 24 hours, we couldn't fathom spending $500+ a night for a room at Ventana or Post Ranch, which I'm sure are wonderful places but not worth it for just one night. Even then, I find places like these charge ridiculous rates because 'they've got you' and there aren't really nice, comparable places around.

We read an article about the Glen Oaks in a budget travel magazine and were a bit hesitant to consider it, however, the motel's website showed wonderful rooms not to mention much much better rates than the two other properties I've mentioned. The Glen Oaks is a wonderful place to stay in this beautiful part of California.

We booked a very nice King room for $175 for the one night and were very impressed. The room was very cozy, 'modern rustic', recently remodeled with wonderful furnishings and a great bathroom with a heated stone floor. We had a nice 2-sided fireplace which kept the room nice & warm and there was a private enclosed patio off the room if we wanted to enjoy the fire from outside (although it is enclosed in glass). The room's decor was so nice that we wouldn't half mind decorating our house like they've done so nicely.

The room was surprisingly quiet considering the motel lies right on Highway 1 in Big Sur. After dark and through the night, very few people actually drive the road so you don't get much road noise at all.

Having only heard about some of the other places to stay in Big Sur, it seems Glen Oaks is an obvious choice. You can certainly pay less at the River Inn or at the campgrounds, but I'm quite sure you won't be disappointed with Glen Oaks; it's a great looking and great feeling place that feels fresh & new. Looking at the River Inn's website...the rooms there seemed a bit too 'rustic' and dingy.

When you do plan your trip to Big Sur and book at the Glen Oaks, make sure to spend ample time just down the road at Nepenthe, sit out on the back deck up top and enjoy the incredible view and food (Ambrosiaburgers!).

Nice property. Surprisingly peaceful given proximity to highway. Helped by thick adobe walls between rooms I suppose. Very nicely finished, though small, rooms. Centrally located. Two main complaints. (1) Try to avoid dealing with snarky know-it-all man who's at the desk in the morning; the women who work in the afternoon/evenings are much better. (2) Had a strange water issue they couldn't seem to acknowledge, much less fix. Cold water tap ran hot (I mean REALLY hot) most of the time. Some kind of backflow issue, I think, because the toilet bowl even filled with literally steaming hot water once!

My wife and I just returned from a lovely stay at the Glen Oaks. We had only planned on one night but we found it so peaceful that we booked an extra night. It looks as though it has been recently renovated was clean and comfortable and really beautiful. They even provide Yoga mats so you can stretch it out after a long hike and each room has a fridge to store that half open bottle of wine. No TV which is perfect, and no cell reception (though about 2 min down the road if it's necessary) It is close to both the Post Ranch and Napenthe for sunset drinks.

My husband and I just spent a wonderful weekend in Big Sur and thoroughly appreciated all that Glen Oaks had to offer. We stayed in #5, with a king bed to the far right hand side of the row of rooms. It was an ideal room for us, complete with an enclosed side patio attached to the room where the owner tells us they intend to eventually put a hot tub. The room has a lot of really wonderful little details - from fresh orchids to yoga mats and heated bathroom floors. I'm not usually one for very modern design but this was done really elegantly and just right. The price is fair, and the location is perfect, totally convenient to many restaurants and great hiking and beaches. If you're looking to come to Big Sur to really get away in a peaceful, relaxing spot, Glen Oaks will fit the bill nicely. Highly recommended!
