“Another return to The Cottage, although......”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2012

Returned with wife to The Cottage at Glen Oaks for about the fifth time, we think (yes, we do like it here). Still as peaceful here as ever and we enjoy this cozy cottage....yes. it's pricey but this is Big Sur and you can pay much more around here.
There have been management and staff changes since we were last here two years ago, including, we understand, a recently new housekeeper. Although still pretty clean, there was less attention to detail in that area than we have noted before; supplies such as coffee and towels were replaced on what seemed a curiously random basis! When we complained just slightly about the continuing lack of decaf coffee, ALL coffee became decaf......when we mentioned this again, the manager was qujick to ensure we had everything we needed and pleased us by offering us a modest gift in compensation. This person knows how to recover a service problem, but the fact remained that housekeeping standards had slipped slightly.

Some others lately in the self-catering cabins have remarked on the meanness of the supply of utensils, tableware etc. - difficult to organise a meal service without constantly having to wash stuff - this is particularly puzzling in The Cottage, given that meal preparation is encouraged by the provision of a full stove with oven etc....we do agree with these comments and would urge a little more generous provision of bowls, cutlery etc.

However it is only fair to point out that the quality or standard of what IS supplied is generally very high. Bed superbly comfortable too!

Room Tip: Cabins are better than motel rooms because quieter - not so near highway, and motel rooms have very...

Do you hear that? Ahhhh the sweet sound of silence. We stayed in the Little Sur Cabin (# 5) and loved it. Peaceful, tranquil, complete with our own fire pit and chairs to relax outside our door. Cabin is small, but cozy. The coffee maker and complimentary oatmeal were nice touches. So were the heated bathroom floors! The front desk staff was helpful and knowledgeable.

My only complaints are that the wood shed was across from our cabin, so for about an hour in the morning it was loud a they loaded wood. Also, the cabins come semi-attached, so you could slightly hear neighbors if they were moving around a lot. When they weren't, however, it was very quiet, which is what we were looking for.

For dinner, ask the staff to make you a reservation at Big Sur Bakery and Restaurant. It is about a 5 minute drive and has great ambience and delicious food. A little pricey, but well worth it.

Later on, if you feel adventurous, head to Esalen for the late night got springs.

My husband and I did a road trip up the California coast in October and stayed one night at the Glen Oaks Motel. It was the perfect spot since we were able to take in nature and relax in a luxury cabin after a day out hiking (my type of camping!) The staff at Glen Oaks was extremely friendly and helpful! They recommended and even helped make reservations at wonderful places for lunch (Ventana) and dinner (Big Sur Bakery). The staff also gave us a map of popular hiking spots. We stayed in a fireside lodge room and loved the cozy feel from the fire place!! Unfortunately it was too cold out use the outdoor patio/make s'mores, so we'll have to come back for that!). I would definitely recommend Glen Oaks and we hopefully will be back soon!

Room Tip: Book early since this is a popular place to stay and good rooms go fast!!

What a wonderful place to stay in Big Sur! We only stayed stayed one night, 10/31/12, but had a great time! We stayed in room # 9 which was a king room in the motor lodge with a dual sided fire place. Our room was the closest to the community firepit which I though might be a problem due to noise, but it wasn't an issue at all. We purchased a smor'es kit from the front dest for $16.00 and enjoyed them by the fire with a nice bottle of wine. It was great! We met a very nice family visiting from Paris, France and had fun explaining the tradition of Halloween and sharing our smor'es. The room itself was nicely decorated, clean and comfortable. The bathroom has heated floors which was a welcome treat on a chilly morning. We will definitely return to Glen Oaks on our next visit....It was perfect!

We stayed in the Sycmore cabin for 3 nights and loved it. The scenery was picture perfect and the fire pit was put to great use. The bed, lines and pillows were also very comfortable. Pricey, but not for Big Sur

I have nothing but good things to say about this hotel. We stayed in the Adobe Motor Lodge Fireside King. We were in heaven! The decor is fabulous, and you can't beat the location. This is the best value in Big Sur if you want a place with style, but don't want to spend the money for Post Ranch Inn or Ventana. The staff was very helpful - they gave us great dinner recommendations (Big Sur Bakery!) and booked massages at Ventana for us. No complaints at all.

Room Tip: Definitely pay the extra for the double sided fire place. There is no restaurant on site, although t...
