“Absolutely perfect wedding day!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2007

We booked the Post Ranch Inn for our wedding based on reviews from this website. What an amazing experience. We booked their elopement package. Every person we dealt with from start to finish was wonderful. The best part about the package was how little we had to do. We e-mailed a few times with their wedding coordinator and non-denominational officiant, Soaring, and she was just great. We had to decide on our preferences for a few things, and that was it. Easy!

We arrived right in time for check in. They have a fleet of Lexus SUVs and Sergio drove us around the property and to our room after we checked in. The check in process was great and everyone was just so very nice - happy to have us. We booked one of the north ocean houses and it was amazing! See pictures attached for the view from the room, and of the room itself. We just sat right down on the patio and had a little picnic (full mini bar with snacks - complimentary). Yes, this place is expensive, and the ocean house very expensive. But I have to say, it's worth it. We couldn't have been happier. The spa tub was wonderful. The bed was so very comfortable. The shower is the only thing I can complain about. I was a little surprised it wasn't a fancy shower head given the attention to every detail here. Water pressure was good. Nice extra amenities in the bathroom. Great Bath sheets. I love big huge towels! Robes were nice too.

They have people there to drive you wherever you want to go on the property, or in Big Sur. We didn't take them up on that, but I thought that was a great perk. I can't imagine driving the PCH after a few drinks at dinner, so if you plan on having a few drinks - make arrangements with them for a ride! They also have 2 convertibles on the property for guest use.

The property itself is so beautiful and well maintained. Take a walk down one of the trails if you have the time. Along the trails are water coolers stocked with water bottles for the guests. The infinity pool is quite lovely (we did not go in) but much smaller than it appears on their website. More like a hot tub size. The regular pool is very nice also - but for some reason no one was using it. Could have something to do with it being May.

There were hammocks throughout the property. Benches. Beautiful flowers. Turkeys, deer, condors, lizards, lots and lots of butterflies, hummingbirds. Just so so lovely. We had a visitor at our room - a little bird - he would jump up at the windows and peck at them, like he was knocking to come in. It was really neat. The whole place smells of lavender which grows all over the property. Also, the soap in the bathroom is lavender. So now that we are home, a little bit of lavender lotion brings me back to post ranch in a second. Such an amazing experience.

Yes, the restaurant is under construction, but they do their very best to make sure you don't notice, and we really didn't. The temporary restaurant is very nice, but you don't get the view that the regular restaurant has. Our room did, so we didn't feel like we were missing out. We only had breakfast at the temporary resaurant, which was complimentary for resort guests. Not a great variety, but the quality was fantastic. Again, the people in the restaurant were so friendly and happy to be there.

We had dinner at the Redwood Grill (a bit north of the resort) which was pretty good, and not very expensive. It appeared to be a local hangout. We also had dinner at the Big Sur River Inn (also a bit north of the resort). Food was pretty good. Hostess was snotty. Waitress was nice. I think it was $18 or $20 for my chicken dinner. They have these great seats out by (and in) the river in the back of the restaurant. Check it out if you can. Nice outdoor seating, although we sat inside. We went in to Big Sur Bakery. It was late in the day, so perhaps that was the reason, but we found the selection to be minimal and people snotty. Kind of a disappointment given the rave reviews the place has gotten.

Our wedding day was incredible. Perfect day - 73 degrees - not a cloud in the sky. After breakfast we just sat on our patio and stared at the view all day. Soaring performed our ceremony and she was just so great. We couldn't imagine it any other way. Their pastry chef made us a little wedding cake and she decorated it with Big Sur roses - little tiny pink ones. Just so lovely. The flowers they put in our room, and the bouquet and boutinnier were also lovely. Everything was perfect. The only thing I would have done differently would have been to book a few extra days. Two days wasn't enough. Hopefully one day we will return. I can't imagine a more perfect place on the planet.

We absolutely love Post Ranch Inn. From the hiking trails to the wild turkeys to yoga. The staff was wonderful. The restaurant food was the only disappointment. It was extremely rich and did not appear
to be healthy. Since Post Ranch Inn gives the impression of promoting
health through its spa, yoga and hiking trails, the food should be healthy. When we stay at Post Ranch Inn again, we will eat elsewhere.

I totally agree with all the reviews and we had a wonderful time; however you are not told when booking that the hotel is being renovated. The amazing restaraunt overlooking the Pacific Ocean is NOT in use; instead they are using a temporary restaraunt consisting of wood cabins, at the bottom of the mountain (No sea views here). Also the infinity pool, again overlooking the Pacific is closed, you have to use a small pool in a fenced off area, by the temporary restaraunt. The hot tub overlooking the ocean is however in use. Clearly, this situation will not last forever, but be aware of it, as it definately spoilt our experience of this fantastic location. Additionally, there is a small amount of construction noise; albeit they do keep this to a minimum; but sound inevitably travels intensely in such a location. I imagine that the hotel will however be more amazing when completed. PS: We visited in April 07

The Post Ranch Inn is an internationally recognized property, and having just spent two marvelous days in the "Brazil" house, I can see why. My wife and I visited during spring break. The property itself is a collection of thirty individually named, very unique buildings or units that straddle the top of a redwood tree forested ridge a thousand feet immediately adjacent to the Pacific ocean far below. Each unit is free standing and about 15 to 30 feet away from its nearest neighbor. There are a set of units that are built into the ridgetop that face out over the pacific. The views are breathtaking. There are another set of buildings built on large poles elevated off the ground so that they sit up among the redwood trees. Our unit for instance had multiple windows that gazed directly out into the forest. There were views of the mountains to the east, and views of the ocean to the west. The service is comprehensive and impeccable. The ridge top is very quiet and serene. You are driven to your "unit" in a hybrid Lexus under electric power - so there is no sound of vehicles during your visit to intrude on your thoughts. Just the sound of the birds and the wind rustling through the trees.
Our unit had a spendid bathroom with a large double size hand built, stone tile lined jacuzzi style combo tub/shower. Next to the show were full windows (with optional shades) that looked out into the redwoods. Since the unit was up high on a ridge, we could shower without closing the blinds and watch the sun rise over the mountains.
The bedroom is extra large with a wonderful bed. The units are not rectangular, but a series of inter-connected square/triangle shapes; thus making for some unique windows. Our unit had a wonderful triangle window in the ceiling where you could look up from the bed and see the trees and tree tops as well as the stars. Each unit also has a beautiful wood fireplace that is fully "ready to go" upon your arrival. I also enjoyed the large private deck for reading and looking out over the mountains.
The Sierra Mar Restaurant on the property is very well known. At the moment the ridge top restaurant is undergoing renovations. I believe it is due to re-open in June 2007. The "temporary" local is a short ways down the hill east of the ridge. The views out the window are of fields and mountains - not as breathtaking as the ridge - but the food was marvelous. We enjoyed amazing breakfast buffets, a two sumptuos evenings.
Being in the middle of Big Sur and on the edge of the pacific, the Post Ranch Inn has been very deliberate about not having lots of bright lights on the property at night. They use small "night lights" to provide adequate lighting along the pathway on the top of the ridge at night. Therefore, the night time is an inky black so that the stars are really overwhelming. We walked down to the large hot tub, sat on one of the benches, and just gazed out into the stars. Sunset from the ridge top is also magnificent!
While we were there we bought a massage-spa package. This was one of the best spa visits I've had. The massage was excellent.
The Post Ranch Inn excels at the little things and touches. Too many to describe. All in all this is a remarkable property with great service. It is probably the most expensive resort I have stayed at - even including the winter mid-week discount package we purchased. However it rates as the most romantic place I have been - even tying the Rain Forest Retreat on the Big Island of Hawaii - but with the most awesome views. I have traveled extensively in Europe and Asia and vacationed widely across the US, Canada and Europe. The Post Ranch Inn is a "must". You only live once. Treat yourself to a stay at the Post Ranch Inn.

PS - There is an unmarked state park near by that leads down to a beautiful windy beach. The beach is protected by a large rock outcropping which has ragged holes in it a number of places. The waves crash into a small bay on the south side, and crash directly onto the beach to the north of the rock. A small creek runs through the beach and into the ocean. It makes for a very relaxing (though chilly) visit to the ocean, and very picturesque.

My wife and I had two magical nights and three wondeful days at this resort. To call Post Ranch a hotel is a misnomer.
First night, we stayed in the Diaz room in the butterfly house (third floor room). We loved the luxury touches in the room.
The service at check in was great. The resort took us to our room in a whisper quiet hybrid Lexus SUV.Clever!
Second night, we upgraded to the Torre ocean view room. (While we live on the beachfront, I enjoyed this Pacific coast room with the sunset views.) The upgrade was handled flawlessly! These folks are organized.
The restaurant on the Pacific is being remodeled, so meals were presented in a new building which will probably be their spa.Post Ranch never missed a beat! The food was sensational! I really liked the steak dish while my wife loved the scallops.
We were particularly impressed with the spa. My massage was incredible and just the ticket to start relaxing. This may be the best resort in Amercia and if it is not the best, it doesn't take long to call roll.
We are planning our next Post Ranch trip.
My only concern (and I did not experience this) would be the noise factor with other guests above/below your room. I do not think butterfly rooms are particularly well-insulated.

After many years of hearing about the Post Ranch Inn, we stayed for 3 days in early 2007. We have traveled the world and stayed at the best, but this is incomparable. Don't wonder if that Upper Coastal room is worth it, just do it. Opt for a room with a view of the coast your first time. The clear, cool, peace and quiet was wonderful. We loved the trek through the redwood forest with our guide, our fellow guests (you run into the same group everywhere), the hot tubs looking into the Pacific, the restaurant, the resort library where everyone gathered to watch the playoffs on the big screen tv, the comfy bed with a view of the Pacific, the huge shower/ bath that also opens up to the Pacific, in a word, everything. Do three nights, gives you time to soak it all in, better than a week anywhere else on earth. The guests were all nature lovers, adults (yes!), interesting people. We went to Ventana one night for dinner, it was a cafeteria compared to Sierra Mar.

Breakfast was great, very serene...we will go back.

One of the delightful aspects of driving on Highway 1 south from San Francisco is the almost continuous stretch of pristine ocean front - with no development in sight.

This unspoiled wilderness forms the backdrop for the Post Ranch Inn. The resort accommodation is located a kilometre or so from the highway on a ridge that provides extensive ocean views to the west and mountain vistas to the east. The resort itself is located on around 100 acres.

The accommodation buildings and restaurant building are designed to blend into the environment with extensive use of timber and glass. They are a little "nuts and berries" in feel and the interiors (particularly the furnishings) are somewhat dated. The Inn was closing for refurbishment just after we left.

Perhaps the management may want to retire the "sinuous" sculptures located in the grounds. They detract from the serenity of the environment and made me wince every time I came upon one walking through the landscaped gardens.

We stayed in a Tree House that faced the mountains. The Tree Houses are individual structures built on stilts with views of trees, mountains and roaming deer. A wood burning fireplace formed the focus of the room although curiously the fireplaced faced the side of the bed rather than the seating arrangement.

The only highlight of the rather "ho hum" bathroom was the tub with a large operable window and extensive green views. Between the bathroom and bedroom was a bar alcove with complimentary drinks, biscuits, chevre and dried fruit - replenished daily.

The views from the restaurant "Terra Mar" , that literally hangs over the cliff toward the Pacific, were truly amazing during the day. However, at night the restaurant lacked impact and warmth. The furniture is again dated and hopefully will be replaced in the refurbishment.

The food and wine selections were first rate. We enjoyed a late lunch on our day of arrival and were pleased to be served petite courses of exquisite food.

I would highly recommend a stay at the Post Ranch Inn for a truly memorable experience.
