This place is just perfect. As a New Yorker, I was scared to stay in a place without a lock- and one I had to be quiet in, but there was no need. I entered a different world when I pulled into Deetjens on my ride down the coastline. The food was exceptional, the staff was genuine, Deetjens was everything I needed and could never imagine I wanted!

Our first choice for a room in Big Sur was Deetjens. Sold out three months go. Driving thru this area we just happened to notice their sign saying room available. Someone canceled a few minutes before we drove by. A one minute window of luck.

Deetjens is every thing you read about. We enjoyed our stay there. A cool foggy night. 57 degrees. Had the Frankin room. After a great dinner here we lit a fire and smiled as we fell off to sleep.

Walk up the private road within Deetjens and see some very large Redwood trees.

They mention in the handout sheet that there is nice drive on the Old Coast road. We already planned this drive. This drive will test you and your car.

My last word on Deetjens is to go there and just enjoy the experience. We were glad to hear that a Foundation now ownes Deetjens and that it is listed as a National Historic site.

Room Tip: The Frankin is a small room but very Deetjens . It's away from the road.

Fabulous food and welcoming atmosphere. Some of the rooms are a little close to the road but it does quieten down at night. Walls are paper thin. Food was the best we had outside of LA. Definitely stay there again. Oh and cell phones don't work in this area, you'll have to drive a couple of miles to get coverage.

We have been to Deetjen's many, many times and never been disappointed. It is a step back in time with rustic, yet very comfortable rooms. The magic is in the setting. The central canyon surrounded by trees relaxes you the minute you step out of the car. Gracious staff in the restaurant is a plus, as is the easily accessible coffee and tea before your breakfast ( for overnight guests only). The library/reading room is quaint and unusual. Be sure to check out the diaries left in each cabin for a fun read.

Room Tip: Try to book way ahead to get a quiet room far from the main road. But any room is comfortable and un...

Took some consideration to write this recommendation. I didn't want to expose something I really wanted to keep to myself (didn't want the crowds to come) But Deetjens Inn deserves a HURRAAH and a medal of excellence: Its a little perfect spot on earth. Not any luxury or some of the usual common features at hotels and you have to be quiet at night i 'cause the walls are as thin as paper. But the location! And the spirit of the place! And the restaurant serving both breakfast & dinner. And the special decoration of the rooms and the lack of keys and mobil/internet coverage. Wauw!

We called in, there were no vacancies, and we just ate elsewhere, but the service from the sweetest reception lady would make us return! She advised us to call to Cambria and directed us to a super b&b the little sur. thanks so much for that, baby doll
