Of course the accommodation at the Big Sur Lodge is somewhat spare and not fashionable; it is in a state park - in a gloriously peaceful setting, I might add. I found my cabin to be superb. Very comfortable, with plenty of space, a decent-sized kitchen including pots, pans, plates, cups, glasses and utensils, a wonderful fireplace for which they provided a bundle of wood and Duraflame firestarter daily (and even delivered additional wood to my door within minutes when I noted that I hadn't used that leftover from the previous night and had hoped to again collect my evening bundle for a nice long night), and a porch on which I could sit and smoke (yes, I know; trying to quit) and read.
I'm not certain why Wi-Fi is necessary in a state park; sure, it would be nice, but visitors are assumed to be getting away from it all. I did have 3G reception on the cabin porch - not in the cabin, however. Nor did it work in the restaurant, where I ate delicious fish meals three nights consecutively, served by the kindest, most attentive servers, who perhaps wanted to make me feel special because I was on my own (thinking and writing over the weekend). The food was quite nicely and healthily prepared as well; an abundance of vegetables. The Pinot Noir was delicious.
While on my way home, I realized, two hours down Highway 1, that I had left a good quality Calphalon kettle on the stove - a kettle that actually has sentimental value to me. I'd brought it along together with my French Press. Debra, from the front desk, was kind enough to have housekeeping check for it in the room; housekeeping was kind enough to locate and take the kettle to reception, and Debra was kind enough to actually mail the kettle back to me in LA. What more can one ask for in terms of customer service? I should add that, even though the Lodge is not a five-star hotel, I felt that I was treated as if I were staying at one by all of the staff.
Yes, it is pricey to stay here, but in doing so, we are supporting a state park, and helping our parks thrive. I'd definitely stay here again! Thank you, Big Sur Lodge, for helping me through a healing Labor Day weekend.
A fireplace and kitchen are a bonus, especially if you like your morning coffee before getting dress...
