“Very quiet and relaxing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2013

Spent one night here while doing a Big Sur/Carmel trip. We arrived just past the wine and cheese tasting ended however they still offered us a glass of wine and a small cheese plate to share which was nice. I had never been to Big Sur before so didn't know what to expect other than what I had heard from some friends that the area was a little throwback to the 60's. I would have to say I agree with that statement in general but the Ventana Inn was really nice. It is perched on the top of a hill with wonderful view of the coast from the restaurant. Our room, classified as a regular guest room, was nice (but still pricey by most standards) with a little balcony outside and alcove inside to sit on. The ceilings were high with wood all the way up the walls so you felt like you were in a cabin. The tub had sliding doors on it that opened to the bedroom side so it made the bathroom feel big. The shower was large and had nice natural slate tile in it and on the floor of the bathroom.

The bed was very comfortable and it was so quiet and peaceful there at night. The place is adult only as they have a clothing optional pool and hot tub. Don't fear, they also have a clothing required pool and hot tub. Continental breakfast is included in the rate and has a number of items from hard boiled eggs to croissants to fruit to muffins, bread, bagels etc. they also had some mini quiche that were cold and didn't taste that great. You can order breakfast if you want from a menu. Take the trail walk to breakfast as it is nice to walk between the redwood and oak trees. They have little benches and chairs to stop and sit on if you want to relax. We had deer on the trail on our walk back which was nice. I would give this place a 5 star if it weren't for the high cost of the room and the additional "resort fee" charges. If guess you are paying for the exclusive nature of the place with that. It was an enjoyable trip and would recommend the place but be prepared to fork over some cash!

The rooms are beautifully appointed. The staff can't do enough for you ferrying you around the resort or within four miles. The only downside was breakfast which was in a beautiful setting outside at the top of the mountain with spectacular views. But the food was cold by the time it arrived. Therefore, don't order hot food, have the buffet. And, there was a lack of staff at breakfast which I am sure is a logistics problem.

The Ventana exceeded our expectations once again.
We first came here for our mini honeymoon and when we wanted a romantic getaway, we came back. The atmosphere is wonderful, the rooms and grounds are beautiful, rustic and luxurious.
We love the japanese hot baths, breakfast and the wine and cheese hour. The carrot spread is unique and they were happy to share the recipe. Just ask.

We love the Ventana Inn and Big Sur and can't wait to return in a few months.

We stayed for 3 nights in a superior room with a small dining area and wet bar on a lower level. At first I was disappointed that it was a mountain view room, but we had our personal redwood right outside the balcony and the room was cozy. Fireplace was nice, though the flue got stuck the first time and we kippered a bit. Everything clean. Walked to breakfast every morning through on a trail.
Continental breakfast was very sufficient with only the cold, dry mini quiches a problem. Lots of great berries and fruit, oatmeal and granola. The croissants were especially good.
The resort is pricey and the resort charge, which covers the swimming pool (really?) and the "complimentary " wine and cheese nothing else was annoying. Tacking on a "voluntary donation " for the local fire department on the bill was strange. See dinner restaurant review for major and only gripe. Spa massage was great, but pricey as massage prices go.

Room Tip: Website does a poor job of explaining what each room includes. The area is hilly so bring sturdy hik...

Ventana is an amazing oasis. We loved every moment. From the second we checked in, we were pampered. The room was amazing and the property was gorgeous. The restaurant was yummy and beautiful! Try the Japanese hot springs!

AMAZING experience! We stayed here right after we got engaged, and it was just as magical as the proposal! This isn't just a hotel, it's an experience, and it exceeds all your expectations. If you're looking for Luxury with a rustic feel, than this is the place for you. One night is not enough as you'll leave wishing you had more time to explore the property...you need to stay at least 2 night! Make sure you take the time to eat at the restaurant on the property. We had the most wonderful time, and the food was fabulous!

Room Tip: We saw a few different rooms, and all of them seemed exquisite so I'm not sure you can go wrong...
